Thanks for the pics, Laurie. As close as I am, here in Nebraska, I should get out there more than I do. And you picked a good time to go -- the kids are back in school and the tourist season is generally winding down.

There's a tourist season in Nebraska? "Oooh! Look! What a beautiful slight elevation!"

You can't fool me! Nebraska's state quarter shows its hill. Which is, for some reason, surmounted with what looks to be a giant stone penis.

There's a tourist season in Nebraska? "Oooh! Look! What a beautiful slight elevation!" Tourist season - referring to Colorado, but you knew that. The eastern I-80 vistas in Neb. are a bit deceptive, being the dullest in the state. The Sandhills region is a gorgeous stretch of fixed dunes and lakes, the Pine Ridge area in the northwest is rugged hills and canyons, looks like backdrop for a Western, and don't forget Scott's Bluff (not on the quarter!) which is just south of the town of the same name. As for Chimney Rock, on the quarter, it's just glad to see you!

Well let's not get carried away here. It's not like either of you live in Michigan!

Well let's not get carried away here. It's not like either of you live in Michigan! Been there, done that. The entrance into Detroit up I-75 may be the single ugliest - and smelliest - stretch of interstate highway in the US. But the north half of the lower half of state is gorgeous, as is the entire Yoop.

The state camp grounds in Oregon are pretty nice, too. I stayed in one where every site was surrounded by rhododendrons in bloom. Sweet.
Another good thing, come to think of it, is that you have to let a station employee pump your gas. Let's hear it for the friendly, marginally gifted person earning a living.

Powell's Book Store is pretty excellent, and the Amerindian costumes in the museum in Portland are as close to awe-inspiring as I ever need to see.
