whiskey and bosox, i remember you both  Smiley

so sorry to hear about goliard and chartres.  damn.

i have joined the modern age and use a kindle.  now all i need is time to read.  my daughter and her 3 (!) kids are living with us, temporarily, and the chaos that entails makes reading a lingering dream.  cooking is a close second in that dream landscape, as those kids are damn picky, and i am on-again/off-again with chemo.

i don't remember who posted the 'black italian fruitcake' so many years ago, but i made it just last weekend (i do it annually), and now i can't wait til christmas!

Was at NYT going back to around 2001, first as Nilson, then as Bartonphink, but didn't appear in the Books fora too much -- more at Movies and Science/Mysteries.   Your moniker sounds familiar, though.

Whiskey -- G'babe did, in fact, find us a couple years ago and posted a few times.  Swinging a vorpal sword rather wildly, IIRC.

oh, do tell teddy to dump the fashion and return to us!

i started a livejournal many years ago, missing an online outlet (and also wanting to meet people in my new town of portland).  while i have done a bit of writing there, it is mostly a chronicle of life.

in other news, i am eagerly awaiting john irving's new book.

I might break down and get a Kindle for a really stupid reason. Can anyone vouch for the device's browsing capabilities?   I'm looking at the one that comes with Free 3G - but the one they really go on about browsing on is the Kindle Fire.

Basically, I'm looking at it to take on a plane so I don't have to lug the laptop through security, etc. (I don't want to spend iPad money, and I'm really resistant to shelling money out monthly for a data plan.)  I'd use the Kindle at our destination to look up directions, points of interest, restaurants, etc.  Then, once the trip is done, I might actually download a book or something.   If anyone would like to persuade me to commit to the purchase or run away screaming, I'd appreciate your opinions.  TIA, me

That's what someone I know thought and fair enough it offers that (provided you are in a wi-fi zone if you're not going for 3G). But you may be pleasantly surprised at its ability to draw you in to reading books on it. People I know who have one in time have come hold it in high regard.

I've browsed stuff on theirs and it's alright - it's black and white output but for checking out what you've listed I'd say that shouldn't be a problem.

I quite like the idea of being able to type up and save a note against any given paragraph on any given page. Whereas with real books that's not really something I ever do. (Any time I ever consider doing it I always think it feels less like a note, more like graffiti.)
