Editorial Notebook Egg Factory By VERLYN KLINKENBORG Published: August 28, 2010
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/29/opinion/29sun4.html
XXX
"Gregory P. Martin, a poultry specialist at Pennsylvania State University, said that for many years, thousands of salmonella tests had been done annually on egg farms in Pennsylvania as part of a voluntary program that had been highly successful in combating salmonella. Mr. Martin said that it was rare for those tests to yield a positive result for Group D salmonella, the group identified in the 73 tests at Wright County Egg farms and which includes Salmonella enteritidis.
“If it shows up in the environment, it’s a red flag that we need to look further to help eliminate it off the farm,” Mr. Martin said.
The records released by Congress showed hundreds of instances in which salmonella of some type was found at Wright County Egg farms.
But Mr. Martin said the presence of generic salmonella on a farm meant little, since there were many types of harmless salmonella in the environment. But any samples that show the presence of Group D salmonella should be sent for further testing for the toxic form, he said.
The test reports released by Congressional investigators showed that in many cases, the samples were sent for further testing, but it was generally unclear what the additional testing found.
Only one report, dated Aug. 4, just days before the recall, showed that additional testing had confirmed the presence of Salmonella enteritidi",
from current article in nytimes.com -- Salmonella at Egg Farm Traced to 2008
By GARDINER HARRIS and WILLIAM NEUMAN Published: September 14, 2010 How odd. I became ill after eating four Martins Eggs used in my cooking and baking that day, here in Pennsylvania. Grant you there are a lot of people by that name here in Lancaster County farm country. The next day, I woke nauseated and was subjected to projectile vomiting before I could even make it, staggeringly, to the bathroom. I could not eat for the better part of two days. Now, several weeks later, I went to my father's working copy of the Stedman's Dictionary, after reading above article and sighed,"...that explains it. Paratyphoid symptoms, indeed." I guess that I'm just a tough old bird because I thought it was merely the hot weather, if this be Indian-Summer. But, I was supposed to take my temperature, because that was the fever involved. You don't even want to imagine the other symptoms.

So much for all your careful buying of food "from the farm". We didn't get sick off of eggs we bought either at Walmart or Food Lion. You really need to be more careful where you do your food shopping.

Great for building muscle and fighting off cravings and hunger, almonds are one of your best choices of nut. Almonds are high in protein and monounsaturated fat (which is a good type of fat for your body). And a handful of almonds gets you about half of your daily requirement of vitamin E and even some calcium. Almonds also contain magnesium which is important for muscle building. You can eat about 1-2 handfuls a day which will do a great job at supressing your appetite.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack frost nipping at your nose!
What do you use the chestnuts for? Stuffing? Heard of it but never had it. Pecans are the plentiful nut around here, along with peanuts of course.

Landstuhl was where one of our former posters from Western European forum at nytimes.com posted. She went by several names, best known as Isabel (Whiskeypriest probably remembers her best because she might oft wander into Shakespeare, occasionally "Meander..." because she was very interested in the Literature of British women (since she was one from the Midlands) sometimes otherwise known as "Jane Turner"
I believe she became a resident of the US before or when we came to Elba, as she was joining her daughter here.

The most important thing in quick diet is the jump-quick working of metabolism. Along with a diet food full of nutrients, several types of exercises are suggested to enhance the metabolic rate. The burning rate of fat very much depends upon the working level of metabolism. So along with exercises, a sound sleep of 9 hours is also recommended.I think this would be the best way for maintaining your health in good condition.

There needs to be a thread here on medicine and medical research, but I will post this here...
---
Canadian researchers find a simple cure for cancer, but major pharmaceutical companies are not interested.
Researchers at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, Canada have cured cancer last week, yet there is a little ripple in the news or in TV. It is a simple technique using very basic drug. The method employs dichloroacetate, which is currently used to treat metabolic disorders. So, there is no concern of side effects or about their long term effects.
This drug doesn’t require a patent, so anyone can employ it widely and cheaply compared to the costly cancer drugs produced by major pharmaceutical companies.
Canadian scientists tested this dichloroacetate (DCA) on human’s cells; it killed lung, breast and brain cancer cells and left the healthy cells alone. It was tested on Rats inflicted with severe tumors; their cells shrank when they were fed with water supplemented with DCA. The drug is widely available and the technique is easy to use, why the major drug companies are not involved? Or the Media interested in this find?
In human bodies there is a natural cancer fighting human cell, the mitochondria, but they need to be triggered to be effective. Scientists used to think that these mitochondria cells were damaged and thus ineffective against cancer. So they used to focus on glycolysis, which is less effective in curing cancer and more wasteful. The drug manufacturers focused on this glycolysis method to fight cancer. This DCA on the other hand doesn’t rely on glycolysis instead on mitochondria; it triggers the mitochondria which in turn fights the cancer cells.
The side effect of this is it also reactivates a process called apoptosis. You see, mitochondria contain an all-too-important self-destruct button that can't be pressed in cancer cells. Without it, tumors grow larger as cells refuse to be extinguished. Fully functioning mitochondria, thanks to DCA, can once again die.
With glycolysis turned off, the body produces less lactic acid, so the bad tissue around cancer cells doesn't break down and seed new tumors.
Pharmaceutical companies are not investing in this research because DCA method cannot be patented, without a patent they can’t make money, like they are doing now with their AIDS Patent. Since the pharmaceutical companies won’t develop this, the article says other independent laboratories should start producing this drug and do more research to confirm all the above findings and produce drugs. All the groundwork can be done in collaboration with the Universities, who will be glad to assist in such research and can develop an effective drug for curing cancer.
You can access the original research for this cancer here.
This article wants to raise awareness for this study, hope some independent companies and small startup will pick up this idea and produce these drugs, because the big companies won’t touch it for a long time.

There is a movie with Sean Connery where he plays a research doctor who finds a cure for cancer in Brazil, he finds the cure but he cannot figure out how to make it and a key ingredient is missing, the name of the movie is Medicine Man, it is a great movie, and Sean Connery is great, and it was all filmed in Brazil.
Here is the link for the movie on the IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104839/
Medicine Man is a great movie that inspires me as an actor and filmmaker, and it shows what can be done if you do it right. And Sean Connery has proven that an actor can keep doing great work even as one grows older, and Medicine Man is a perfect example of that. Medicine Man is a wonderful film, and Sean Connery is a wonderful actor.
And maybe the cure for cancer will indeed be found in Brazil. (Although I read that Canadian cancer researchers are making great progress...)
Salute,
Tony V.

Well, every six months I have to do blood tests, because I am on a medication known to cause diabetes, and they test for everything while I am being tested, and a couple of things concerned my doctor, for one thing I lost thirty to forty pounds, and also my white blood cell count was high, so he had me come back in four months later for more tests, and instead of going down my white blood cell count went even higher, and my doctor wants to know why my white blood cell count keeps going up, so I have to have more testing done. One thing that it could be is cancer, or it might be Leukemia, so that has us worried.
So, my primary care physician referred me to the Pacific Cancer Medical Center for more tests, that is where the hematologist is, and we will find out what is going on.

I have to go to my cousin Robert's wedding right in the middle of my testing, so the tests will have to wait for a week while I go to Robert and Christina's wedding.
I feel good, I do not feel sick, so hopefully I am not sick, and my lungs are fine as we x-rayed my lungs last week and my lungs are healthy, hopefully it is nothing.
I have French royalty in my family tree, the Bourbon/Capetian royal line, and I was doing college level algebra in the 6th grade, at eleven years old, and later I was accepted into The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and also God has already given me miracles in my life, God blessed my family (although there have been hard times too...) so that we could be leaders and help our world and help God's children. I am so blessed, and my blessings were given to me so that I could help God's children. I truly believe that.
And my internet friend in Brazil who is a doctor and who shares her blessings with people by being a doctor and helping people, she is awesome, said that I need to live, she said that I have too much to give to the world, and that my future children might change the world too. And she is right, I still have a lot to do.
Hopefully I am fine, we will find out after my cousin's wedding what is going on.
Here is a video that I made recently about miracles which God has given me in my life:
http://tinyurl.com/66jw7qx
(And you can see in the video that I do not look good, in the video I only weighed 150 pounds, and normally I weigh 190 pounds... but I am trying to eat better, and I am exercising again.)
Here is a little history on our family tree, if what Grandma said was true about the Bourbon/Capetian royal line being in our family tree...
“According to the historian Karl Ferdinand Werner, Capétiens constitute the oldest royal dynasty in male succession of the world. In fact, with the two kings robertiens Eudes 1st and Robert 1st, from 888 to 1848, the dynasty of Hugues Capet gave thirty-seven kings to France. Capétiens also gave thirteen kings to Naples and Sicily, ten kings in Spain, four kings in Hungary, three kings in Poland, three emperors of Romanie (Constantinople) and per illegitimate way thirty-two kings with Portugal and two emperors in Brazil.”
Bourbon/Capetians helped to lay the foundation for much of Christian civilization, and a Bourbon currently sits on the throne of Spain.
I can play those roles too as an actor, I know I can, I would be perfect for those parts.
Anyhow, hopefully I am fine, we will find out after my cousin's wedding.
Salute,
Tony V.
