I did not know this, but some people believe in a Best Actress curse -- ie, win a statue, lose a husband/main squeeze. I guess there's somewhat of a track record of this. Kate Winslet being the latest victim, with Sandra Bullock possibly joining her depending how this story shakes out. Some sources say there's something to it, as SB just cancelled some appearances to deal with "unforeseen personal issues." Oscar Curse?Jesse James Cheating on Sandra Bullock?I'll be organizing a lynch mob to hunt down Sandra Bullock's husband. Anyone who wants to sign on, PM me. (Just kidding, Big Brother. No need to assign an agent.)

I saw that opening car scene in The Vanishing, so I know how Sandra can be when she's getting tired and fussy.
Kidding.
I hope this Oscar curse thing is not some stupid male ego thing. Not all of us guys whip out tape measures every time the spouse accomplishes something. Certainly, Sam Mendes would have nothing to be insecure about, given the terrific work he's done as a director.

harrie,
Know how you feel...but,somehow I think it has less to do with being nominated for an Oscar for that "picture" and actually stuck with winning it --as re: that Oscar Curse, than having signed the contract to have to show up on set when she did which Jesse took advantage of while fully aware where she would be!
WHOOPEE GOLDBERG said something interesting on The View, about "Men in general" and how being on that TV panel discussion has opened her eyes. I don't watch the show but caught her clip in the news. To the affect that men think of sex 24/7; and that men are dogs, or did she say men are devils?
It may be that movie scripts are like men. Never take second best when you know that your best work was a work of art and that it will still be there for all to see as the real deal.

Jesse James must have something that is not apparent to me for a sensible woman like Sandra Bullock to marry him in the first place. With his fascination for skin art and his body covered with it, and his former girl friend likewise, why would she think she could run a normal household yoked to that?

Maybe she perceived (rightly or wrongly) other qualities of character that went beyond his skin decorations? I don't think I would fall in love with someone and hang out with them for a while and then be saying, if marriage were under consideration, "Whoa, she has tattoos! I really can't get past that! How is a normal life ever possible with tattoos?"
I mean, if someone had a "fascination" with some other art, say the kind that hangs on walls, would you express such skepticism for their marital prospects and the chance of a "normal household?" Supposed she married someone like Andy Warhol -- would the absence of tattoos guarantee a normal household?

Just my opinion, Barton, but covering a good portion of your body with tatoos is not normal (including the palms of your hands). And Andy Warhol was not normal. Neither was Norman Mailer. Of course, "not normal" abounds and seems to find nooks and crannies and women (or men) to settle into. I'm good with that. Sandra Bullock seems normal to me but perhaps I'm wrong. She did live with and eventually marry Jesse James. She thanked him during her Oscar acceptance speech. Just goes to show how well we can ever know other people, especially actors and artists of all stripes.
This post reveals a lot about me. Most of my posts do.

It reveals your virulent and epidermist position on tattoos. Epidermism is an insidious social poison that is gradually unraveling the fabric of this country, tearing families apart, and promoting an atmosphere of hate.
As my posts reveal, I'm a smartass. Seriously, they had a good thing, he made a mistake and, if they weren't celebrities under a media microscope, they might even work things out.
Sandra does exude normality, in a fun-girl-next-door sort of way.

Barton. BTW, I've been meaning to tell you how much I like your Lily Tomlin quote. Makes me smile every time I read it.

Credit for the quote may be due to Jane Wagner who wrote for Tomlin, but I agree it's a good 'un.

Ah, Temps, the woman behind the woman.
Speaking of Lily, she has been appearing to great effect in this season of Damages on cable FX.

When I was a young man, I had an odd affinity for women who were either comedians, or Jewish. So, yeah, Goldie Hawn was like getting shot with both barrels. I took a lot of flack -- "you think Carol Burnett is hot? AYFKM?" And maybe this explains the yearnings I felt after seeing Debra Winger in "Forget Paris" and her great comic moment of having a pigeon stuck in her hair. All I can say is, if Rachel Weisz or Natalie Portman ever move to comedy, I'm a dead man. Process servers will come a-knocking. TROs will flow.

Sorry to miss that, she's been a fave forever and I haven't seen her on tv since West Wing I did see her in the movie A Prairie Home Companion--Keillor and Altman didn't mix well, sadly, esp. since it was Altman's last effort. I did watch a few episodes of the first season of Damages, but didn't stick with it and don't recall why.

barton: I expect you're too young for Elaine May, but if someday the interest centers as much/more on the work as the personages, stuff of hers is still around.

I second the motion and she is the funniest lady but in such a subtle way that you just can't help liking her.
