Sofia Coppola to wed in ancestral Italian town

Aug 27 08:24 AM US/Eastern
By NICOLE WINFIELD
Associated Press

ROME (AP) - Filmmaker Sofia Coppola is going back to her roots, getting married Saturday in the southern Italian town where her great-grandfather was born.

Coppola is marrying Thomas Mars, lead singer of the French rock band Phoenix and the father of their two young daughters.

The ceremony will take place in the garden of a historic palazzo that her famous father, Francis Ford Coppola, has renovated in the center of the Italian town of Bernalda, according to mayor Leonardo Chiruzzi. The senior Coppola plans to turn it into a luxury boutique hotel.

The town, near the UNESCO-recognized troglodyte settlement of Matera in southern Basilicata, was home to the elder Coppola's grandfather, Agostino, before he emigrated to the United States.

Chiruzzi, who is due to perform the civil ceremony, said the wedding would be simple but beautiful.

"If they wanted to do a Hollywood wedding, they wouldn't have done it here," Chiruzzi said by phone on the eve of the nuptials. "(They) chose to do it here because it's here—it's here that is beautiful."

There was no immediate word on guests.

Sofia Coppola's 2003 film "Lost in Translation" won the 40-year-old filmmaker an Academy Award for original screenplay and made her the third woman ever nominated for a directing Oscar. Her 2010 film "Somewhere," about an actor who sees the emptiness of his existence through the eyes of his child, won the top Golden Lion prize at the Venice film festival last year.

She divorced fellow filmmaker Spike Jonze in 2003.

The elder Coppola has become something of a spokesman for Italy's Basilicata region, located on the arch of boot-shaped Italy. In a promotional video for the area, he reminisced about his grandfather's tales about Bernalda and extolled Basilicata's unspoiled—and largely unknown—beauty and culture.

Just watch the hyphenated names, with the kids.  It just wouldn't be good.

Though I'm up for a Freida Pinto and Sean Bean union.

Alyssa Milano and husband welcome a baby boy

Aug 31 05:35 PM US/Eastern

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Alyssa Milano is a mom.

A publicist for the 38-year-old actress says Milano gave birth to a seven pound baby boy Wednesday morning: Milo Thomas Bugliari (BOOG'-lee-ar-ee).

This is the first child for Milano and her husband, David Bugliari, who wed in August 2009.

Milano wrote on her Twitter page Wednesday that her heart "has tripled in size" and that she loves her new son "more than all the leaves on all the trees."

Milano starred in TV's "Who's the Boss?" and "Charmed" and can next be seen on screen in the ensemble comedy "New Year's Eve." Bugliari is an agent with Creative Artists Agency.

Bill Cosby, Chita Rivera to share NYC benefit show

Oct 7 05:07 PM US/Eastern
By MARK KENNEDY
AP Drama Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - At 74, Bill Cosby says he doesn't want to dawdle.

"When you hit the 70 mark, some of your friends have been destroyed or are dead," the comedian and activist says by phone. "You keep going, but you do have a feeling that as you're walking forward, someone's turning the lights out behind you."

One of America's most beloved and groundbreaking joke-tellers, Cosby has leveraged his fame—he is the first black actor to win a lead actor Emmy and beloved for his groundbreaking series "The Cosby Show"—to give back.

"We really don't want waste time," he says of his septuagenarian peers. "I just don't want to leave without thanking those who are doing good. It doesn't have to be a big thing."

Cosby has found one of those things in an Oct. 13 benefit for the organization Art Start at New York City's 1,500-seat Town Hall. The comedian will be joined by Chita Rivera and Mark Nadler for a one-night-only performance of "Laugh, Sing, Dance."

"I'll do part of my show that I've been doing around the country," says Rivera, 78, who is an old friend of Cosby's. She'll be singing songs from musicals she's most famous for, including "Kiss of the Spider Woman," "Chicago," "West Side Story" and "Bye Bye Birdie."

Art Start, now celebrating its 20th anniversary, has been providing visual and performing arts programs for New York City's most at-risk youth, offering an outlet for children who are homeless, leaving jail or coping with parents in crisis.

"Many of these children are homeless. Many are feeling strongly unempowered, not having a choice about anything," Cosby says. "Through touching, feeling, hearing, seeing, these kids may be able to disappear from the gloom in their heart."

Nadler, a singer and pianist who is a member of Art Start's board of directors, brought the two acclaimed performers together for the event. Ticket prices range from $35 to $150.

Tony Award-winning Rivera was most recently on Broadway in "Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life" and was recently seen in the Signature Theatre's production of "The Visit." She's doing a reading for a new musical and is slated to continue her concerts. Cosby is awaiting the release of his new book, "I Didn't Ask to be Born (But I'm Glad I Was)," which comes out Nov. 1.

For Cosby, helping kids is a mission and getting to work with Rivera is just icing on the cake. "She has one of the greatest laughs. Period. Especially at our age," he says. "She just laughs so hard so it's my pleasure.

Know who Dean Winters is?  You might -- from "Oz" (O'Reilly) to "30 Rock" (Duffy) to "Mayhem" in the Allstate commercials (with sci-fi gigs in The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Life on Mars) -- I was surprised to learn of the "mayhem" in his offscreen life....

Quote
Around June 19, 2009, after shooting the Happy Town pilot, Winters contracted a bacterial infection and collapsed upon arrival at his doctor's office, and while being transported across Central Park in an ambulance, Winters' heart stopped beating for 2½ minutes. Paramedics were able to revive him, and Winters was hospitalized in intensive care for three weeks. Over the course of the next year, Winters developed gangrene, requiring the amputation of two toes and part of a thumb (five-eighths) and ten subsequent operations. Aside from being replaced by Weber when the pilot was picked up for series production, Winters was away from acting until the spring of 2010, when Tina Fey brought him back to 30 Rock and he started work on the Mayhem campaign.

These guys in fashion design have been trying to get her to buy their clothes. This is not the way to do it. (...if you read the whole story right to the bottom line.)

I just read that Princess Carlota Casiraghi is single... I need to hurry up and meet her. I am trying to produce a movie that I helped to write, and when I get my movie made I want to premier it at the Cannes Film Festival, and Princess Carlota Casiraghi attends the Cannes Film Festival every year, and so I can meet Princess Carlota Casiraghi in Cannes. But I need to hurry. My dream date with her would be simple, a picnic with chicken and red wine, on a hillside in Monaco or the South of France by Cannes overlooking the ocean, and if I had one date with her then I am sure that I could win her over. She would love me.

Charlotte Casiraghi & Alex Dellal Split Up, Reports Say

The Huffington Post Ellie Krupnick
First Posted: 1/10/12 Updated: 1/10/12

We've had plenty of royal unions over the past several months, so it's only natural that we get a royal breakup as well.

Charlotte Casiraghi, the 25-year-old daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco, has reportedly split from boyfriend Alex Dellal, writes Hello!.

In case you don't keep close track of your fashionable royals, Charlotte is not a fashion professional (she's actually a competitive equestrian) but has landed herself a Vogue Paris cover and a collaboration with Gucci creating equestrian clothing.

In her downtime, Charlotte has been dating Alex Dellal for four years, even bringing him as her date to the Monaco royal wedding this summer.

While he's no royal, Dellal hails from a lofty background himself. His grandfather Jack Dellal was a millionaire property tycoon; his father, Guy Dellal, carried on the millionaire businessman mantle. And Alex's sister is none other than model Alice Dellal, she of the punk rock look and new Chanel handbag campaign.

In a weird twist, Alice Dellal was rumored to have dated Charlotte Casiraghi's brother, Pierre. What's more: Alice and Alex Dellal also happen to have a sister named Charlotte.

Unfortunately the weird family love affair might be over, as Charlotte parts ways with Dellal in favor of another man. International tabloids are speculating that the Monaco royal has moved onto 40-year-old Gad Elmaleh, a French comedian and actor with whom she was seen last month.

It is hard to keep up with these social types, given the intricate connections between them. Suffice it to say, we hope Charlotte is happy with whomever she's picked. And for our purposes, we hope she stays in the fashion scene and keeps posing for more fashion mag covers. We'd like that.

My brother married Roy Rogers and Dale Evans' granddaughter, Kristen, so maybe I can get Grace Kelly's granddaughter, Princess Carlota Casiraghi. You never know... And I attended the same acting school that Grace Kelly attended, The American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Nebraska founder of Boys Town orphanage up for sainthood

Feb 27 05:57 PM US/Eastern
By MARGERY A. BECK
Associated Press

OMAHA, Nebraska, USA (AP) - The Archdiocese of Omaha has begun the process of seeking sainthood for a Roman Catholic priest whose efforts to help troubled boys were made famous by the 1938 movie "Boys Town."

Archbishop George Lucas posted an announcement on the doors of St. Cecilia Cathedral on Monday about the archdiocese's nomination of the Rev. Edward Flanagan for sainthood.

The Irish-born Flanagan founded the Boys Town orphanage in a downtown Omaha home in 1917. Boys Town's headquarters today serves as a center for troubled youth and the group runs programs for troubled boys and girls throughout the country.

Actor Spencer Tracy won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Flanagan in "Boys Town."

Flanagan died in 1948 at age 61 while visiting Germany.
