Just one more reminder that life is precious...and fragile. RIP Blain

Changes to kick off fair catch rule...

https://www.si.com/college-football/2018/03/05/ncaa-kickoff-touchback-rule-change-nfl-combine

I can't imagine a kick returner fielding a "kickoff" in the field of play and not wanting to run it back.  Most returners have to hold themselves back from running everything back out of the end zone.

The leading kickoff returner in the NCAA,Tony Pollardof Memphis, averaged 40yards per game. Two fair catches at the 5 yard line gives his team the same average result with little chance of injury to a heavily recruited player who is needed to catch forward passes.

two fair catches at the 5 yard line would average a 20 yard gain...unless he could throw the ball up and catch the 2nd one on the same play and hope they would spot the ball on the 45 yard line.

Would result in a 20yard gain per fair catch x 2, or 40 yards per game.
The bottom line, though, is the returner is not injured and stays in the game to do what he was recruited to do.
Without more emphasis on safety football, as a sport, will not survive.

ahhh...per game.   I thought 40 yards per return was pretty high.

I understand the logic from the coach's perspective.  I'm just saying kids have a competitive nature and you can't score a TD (and achieve glory) by making a fair catch.  I always thought I could break one every time I was fielding a punt or kick off...

Between the quick universal exit, the late night weekday football and the low pay out from the PAC 12 network, there is a great deal of angst out this way.

Have no thoughts on Larry Scott.
But how is swapping out a conference game for a cupcake supposed to improve revenues? Or SOS?
