Melo is indeed playing the 4 most of the time.  Wow - are they strapped.  Would have liked to have seen last night's performance.  I guess this means I care.  Heh.

  Wow - are they strapped.

Which is why I'd try to get Simonsays and a 1st for Morris and some other role players they can use.  Such as Elf, since POR went into the season without a backup PG (and now Lillard is missing a few game).

POR has already started Zonja 4x, Nassir LittleRookie x3, and Tolliver x6.  In 3 weeks, Knix can offer them a whole package of role players in exchange for picks and yute.  Something like Morris, ElFrancSmith, Ellington.

We'd clear our logjams, and get Yute.
POR gets a starting PF and backup G's, exactly what they need to stay afloat until Nurk and Zach come back.

Out of nowhere, Labassiere had a 22 & 11, 3 Ass, 5 Block night.
Somehow that translated into a team worst -11.

Melo somehow is shooting 63% on 3's but just 34% overall.
Just 2 games, but that is highly unusual.

Btw, they mostly brought Melo in because Tolliver can't make anything this season.

I think POR takes an 8th-seed run and whatever playoff finish it gets (including out of them) rather than divest of young talent

2017 Draft

Utah traded Trey Lyles and the #24 pick (Tyler Lydon selected) to DEN for the Donovan Mitchell the #13 pick.

Quite a brilliant move.
DEN could have had Mitchell.

So far lotta useful role players, few stars.  Problem is that the Top 10 was weak, as #1 & #2, Fultz and Ball, haven't played that much or up to expectations.
Franc and Jr. Smith also mar the Top 10.

Redraft?
1. Donovan Mitchell #13
2. Jayson Tatum #3
3. John Collins #19
4. DeAaron Fox #5

Others:
Markkanen #7; Bam #14; Ball #2

Good late round action:
Jarrett Allen #22; OG Anunoby #23; Kuzma #27;
Derrick White #29 Monte Morris #51;

Others could pan out as they get more experience.
Isaac, Kennard, DJ Wilson, Monk, Giles, etc.

DEN could have rectified their muff if they had selected Kuzma or Derrick White.  But they did hit in the 2nd round with Monte Morris at #51.

With the lats pick of the draft ATL chose Alpha Kaba #60.
Reportedly a real person from France ...

My feeling is that even fully healthy, Lillard-McCol-Hood-Zach-Nurk isn't good enough to compete with the Big Boys.  Probably still in the 5-8 range.

So they need to upgrade for the future anyway, and might as well do it now to save this season.

Go to war with Lillard-McC-Morris-Zach-Nurk
and a bench of Elf-Ellington-Hood-Little-Melo-Tolliver
A much more complete team with depth.
That might be enough to make a run to the Conference Finals, if healthy.

Right now they are using Zonja, Simons, Little and 26 ppg starter Melo more than they'd like.

I didn't realize Donovan Mitchell was just 6'1"
I thought he was around 6'3"

I assume his size is partly why he wasn't in the Top 10.
At 6'1" you really need to be a PG and he was seen as an SG.
Though he's graduated to combo guard.

You dont upgrade the future with Morris  You do so bykeeping Simons or....if you don't want to pay him - dealing him for a pick.

If you want to peruse using one of our Dallas picks to get Simons, fine.  But I am not sure Blazers are ready to do this yet either

Yeah... the league just shrunk some guys down

I think Mitchell finds his (OK) level in the league.  "Burgeoning superstar" didnt fit him.

Mitchell looks pretty terrific to me.
His numbers are up across the board.
25 / 5.5 / 4
45% / 38% / 81%
21.7 PER
Better defense than before.

Last year Don Mitch was asked to do too much.
This year, Jazz have a better balanced team.
And Mitch has responded.
USA Summer helped him too.
Looks like an all-star to me.

Team USA also overrated him a bit and you saw the result.

But you are right - good trade for Jazz.  Now they need to decide if they will pay him.

Mitchell this year

8 rebounds  3 times
8 assists once
3 steals twice
50% shooting 6 times (20 last year)
20+ game score 6 times  (24 last year)

I will be looking for better shooting in playoffs his second go round (36-102, 11-43, 24-33) vs HOU

4/150 is about what Mitchell will be seeking when his deal is up.  That (max level) should increase...

You pay him like a star.

Interesting Zach Lowe observations on UTAh's O and DEN's D:

Quote
a lot of midrange shots and too many pull-ups -- especially floaters from Mike Conley and Donovan Mitchell. Midrangers comprise half of Mitchell's attempts, by far the highest rate of his career.

Opponents are cagier defending Rudy Gobert's rim-running. Some teams appear to be sending help defenders into the lane a beat later than in prior seasons -- and having those guys crash hard when they finally go. The gambit appears to be throwing off Utah's ball handlers. Outside shooters aren't coming open as early. The lob to Gobert is there, and then it isn't. He is averaging 3.9 dunk attempts per 100 possessions, down from 6.2 last season, per Second Spectrum data.

That has left Conley and Mitchell wandering with live dribbles before settling for floaters.

On DEN's D:
Quote
Millsap has probably lost a quarter-step on defense, but he still is a bulwark: physical, always anticipating, forever in the right place at the right time with his magnet hands.

He is the common denominator in most of Denver's best defensive lineups. The Nuggets have allowed 96 points per 100 possessions with Millsap on the court, a number that balloons to 107 when he sits.

The Nuggets and Millsap could not agree on an extension before the season. Denver acquired Jerami Grant as Millsap's potential heir apparent. Grant is off to a slow start. Millsap keeps on trucking. His free agency looms as a more fraught subplot than the Nuggets might have expected.

Thanksgiving tournament, playoff play-in games, and reseeding the final 4
« Reply #344 on: November 24, 2019, 09:01:49 PM »

The league, its broadcast partners and the player’s association are in serious discussions regarding a reseeding of the four conference finalists, a 30-team in-season tournament, a postseason play-in and cutting down the regular season from its current 82-game slate to a minimum of 78, according to ESPN.

These changes could be implemented as soon as by the 2021-22 season — the NBA’s 75th anniversary — provided the league’s Board of Governors votes on the initiatives at its meetings in May.

While the tournament is expected to make a lot of noise, the final-four-playoff reseeding could pit two of the league’s true best teams against one another in the NBA Finals. Currently the Eastern Conference champion faces off against the Western Conference champion for the title, which isn’t always a reflection of the league’s two best teams.

In addition, the playoff play-in proposal, as outlined by ESPN would include two four-team tournaments featuring the seventh, eighth, ninth, and 10th seeds in each conference. The seventh seed would host the eighth seed, with the winner of that single game earning the seventh spot. The loser would play the winner of the ninth seed vs. the 10th seed for the final playoff spot.
