Re: Thanksgiving tournament, playoff play-in games, and reseeding the final 4
« Reply #346 on: November 26, 2019, 06:09:49 PM »

In addition, the playoff play-in proposal, as outlined by ESPN would include two four-team tournaments featuring the seventh, eighth, ninth, and 10th seeds in each conference. The seventh seed would host the eighth seed, with the winner of that single game earning the seventh spot. The loser would play the winner of the ninth seed vs. the 10th seed for the final playoff spot.

So you have 6 playoff spots guaranteed in each conference.
the final 2 spots in each conference  can go to:
BOTH of the 7th and 8th seeds (in order determined by playing each other)  OR
ONE of the 7th and 8th seeds with the other to the 9th or 10th seed.

I love this change so much.  Along with going to a 78 games regular season.
The teams in the play-in will have one or two play-in games but they will have playoffs atmosphere.

You get rid of four lousy contests at the end of the year when things are usually already decided and you make your regular season games more almost 5% more meaningful.  Which then limits teams resting players as that could cause them to drop out of the guaranteed playoff spot.

I don't like the mid-season tournament.  And it seems to add more games that ultimately dont mean anything.  Just create a pre-season tournament and be honest that they are pre-season games imbued with no meaning.

I don't like re-seeding the conf finalists.  Keep it East vs West.

I prefer tradition.

Why cut the season to 78 games and then add goofy tournament games?

Maybe keep 82 but have a section of the schedule where all teams play in their division for 10-14 days.  Might rev up divisions which have lost much meaning in favor of conferences.  And help revive local rivalries.  A PHI-BOS Home-Home B2B.  Nets-Knix 2 games in 3 nights.  Etc.

The other day I saw a few minutes of LAC-WAS.
And noticed that there were 3 young Laker cast-off C's playing well: Zubac, Mo Vagner, Thomas Bryant.
Meanwhile LAL squeezing life out of Dwight and JaVale.
For now and the future, I'd prefer one vet and one yute C.

Btw, give WASh some credit for snagging some useful players.
Bertans is a nice stretch Big.
Wagner can board and score from all over.
Hibachimura is looking like a solid #9 pick (though I wish he was an inch or two taller than 6'8".  PJ Washington the #12 pick has played real well for CHA.
I don't know anything about Troy Brown their 2018 pick (#15).
Jordan McRae has been giving them solid bench production.

But at least the Wiz are finding some talent here and there.
And 6-10 isn't a fairly solid record for them.

The Lakers trading Zubac was inexplicable to me. It still is.

That said, Howard is playing far better than I thought he was capable of, even at the 127 pounds he looks like now weighs.

I was certain we'd seen James' last championship.  While they need one more "guy" I think, I think the Lakers record is an accurate reflection of how good they are.

Takes a big man - or you - to admit they were wrong.

LeBron decided on Zubac.

Trying to find some Cam Reddish positives, I noticed that he shoots:
HOME  33% FG & 36% on 3's (3.1 3PtA's)
ROAD  24% FG & 11% on 3's (4.0 3PtA's)

That's a huge 3Pt disparity.  And seems to indicate he can make outside shots.  Not sure on the reason for those splits -- focus, preparation, distractions -- but at least a source of some optimism.

Doncic only the 3rd player to average a 30 Point Triple-Double in a month.

The other two?
Oscar and Rustbrook.

I think Luka can get there for the season (trip doub) - though it would be refreshing if his actions show no interest in matching the Big O and RW

I don't.

Gad Westbrook with a Trip-Dub, but shot just 7-30 with 5 turns.
Harden just 4-20 on 3's, but 24-24 on FT's.  24 Pts from the line!.

A coming out party for Lonnie Walker 4.
28 Pts and 3 steals.
18 4Q Pts.

Refs stole game from Rockets disallowing a Harden dunk that clearly went it before being carried over the rim by the net.

Hmm.
Seems that was slightly under 8 mins and could have been challenged.  And only the delay figuring it out (wrongly) stopped HOU momentum.

So that's a real iffy assertion.

Uber really coming along
6-21 FG, but 15 Boards, 4 Blocks, 3 Steals in 47 mins (OT game).

Two games back, he was 0-7 on 3's then nailed a pair of 3's in the final minute to steal a W.

Turns 24 in a few days.

The usual 1 assist - and 3 turnovers.

Johnson's a sniper - will eat some of Oubre's minutes.
