It turns out that the protesters did not barge past the barricades.

The police let them in:

Republican congresswoman says she will reverse position on challenging election results
From CNN’s Andy Rose

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a Republican from Washington state, will reverse her position on challenging the presidential election results.

“We must have a peaceful transfer of power. The only reason for my objection was to give voice to the concern that governors and courts unilaterally changed election procedures without the will of the people and outside of the legislative process. I have been consistent in my belief that Americans should utilize the constitutional tools and legal processes available to seek answers to their questions about the 2020 election. What we have seen today is unlawful and unacceptable," McMorris Rodgers said in a statement today.

McMorris Rodgers added: "I have decided I will vote to uphold the Electoral College results and I encourage Donald Trump to condemn and put an end to this madness.”

President Bush releases statement on 'Insurrection at the Capitol'

Former President George W. Bush released a statement on what he called an "insurrection" at the U.S. Capitol, calling it "a sickening and heartbreaking sight."

"This is how election results are disputed in a banana republic – not our democratic republic. I am appalled by the reckless behavior of some political leaders since the election and by the lack of respect shown today for our institutions, our traditions, and our law enforcement," Bush said.

"The violent assault on the Capitol – and disruption of a Constitutionally-mandated meeting of Congress – was undertaken by people whose passions have been inflamed by falsehoods and false hopes. Insurrection could do grave damage to our Nation and reputation. In the United States of America, it is the fundamental responsibility of every patriotic citizen to support the rule of law. To those who are disappointed in the results of the election: Our country is more important than the politics of the moment. Let the officials elected by the people fulfill their duties and represent our voices in peace and safety," Bush continued.

He did not mention President Trump by name.

I think today was a horrible example of law enforcement.

Nothing at all wrong with the protest itself.  Those that went too far deserved for the law to come down on them.  But it sure seemed like the Red Sea did part for some reason.  Awaiting answers.  Mayor was understandably non committal as she tries to sort things out.  But she bears a bit more responsibility than she is taking.  (Deniro voice) - "a little bit, yeah..."

She requested the NG yesterday.

As for "nothing at all wrong with the protest itself," where do you think "too far starts?!"

So let’s hear about Antifa and BLM and all the rioting, looting and burning.

And Biden never criticizing it

This claim is unsubstantiated by facts.

Kind of like you not criticizing what's going on today, except your claim is false and has been shown to be false previously.

Are you addressing me?

I stand by my statement that Biden/Harris never collectively or separately condemned BLM protests in DC.

On the contrary I believe they applauded the results while criticizing law enforcement action at the time.

And you continue to stand by your silent approval of what went on so far today by the terrorists in DC.

Yes, we get it - you are pro law and order when it suits you.

And anti-facts.

U.S. Is Blind to Contagious New Virus Variant, Scientists Warn
It’s not too late to curb the contagious variant’s spread in the U.S., experts say — but only with a national program for genetic sequencing.

With no robust system to identify genetic variations of the coronavirus, experts warn that the United States is woefully ill-equipped to track a dangerous new mutant, leaving health officials blind as they try to combat the grave threat.

The variant, which is now surging in Britain and burdening its hospitals with new cases, is rare for now in the United States. But it has the potential to explode in the next few weeks, putting new pressures on American hospitals, some of which are already near the breaking point.

The United States has no large-scale, nationwide system for checking coronavirus genomes for new mutations, including the ones carried by the new variant. About 1.4 million people test positive for the virus each week, but researchers are only doing genome sequencing — a method that can definitively spot the new variant — on fewer than 3,000 of those weekly samples. And that work is done by a patchwork of academic, state and commercial laboratories.

Scientists say that a national surveillance program would be able to determine just how widespread the new variant is and help contain emerging hot spots, extending the crucial window of time in which vulnerable people across the country could get vaccinated. That would cost several hundred million dollars or more. While that may seem like a steep price tag, it’s a tiny fraction of the $16 trillion in economic losses that the United States is estimated to have sustained because of Covid-19.

It was Vice President Mike Pence — not President Trump — who approved the order to deploy the National Guard, our colleague Helene Cooper reports from defense and other administration officials. It was unclear why Mr. Trump, who incited the protestors to storm the Capitol and who is still technically the commander in chief, did not give the order.
