The killer in Uvalde was bullied and lonely. The killers in Columbine had friends, as well as attentive parents who were involved in their lives and held them accountable for earlier bad behavior. One of them had gone to the prom three days before he killed his classmates.

The Parkland shooter had an unstable home life. The Isla Vista shooter had wealthy parents who got professional help for him; when it was clear he was armed and a threat, they unsuccessfully tried to stop him from killing anyone. The Oxford Township shooter received his weapon as a gift from his parents; when they were called to the school before the shooting because of his disturbing behavior, they told him he had to learn how not to get caught. The Sandy Hook shooter's mother liked guns too, and supported his enthusiasm for shooting. She was his first murder victim.

Most of the victims of the Nickel Mines, Sandy Hook, and Uvalde shootings were children. At Columbine and Parkland, almost all were teens. At Virginia Tech, they were mainly young adults.  Most of the Buffalo victims were elderly.

Most of the school shooters were in their teens. The Las Vegas shooter was 64. The Holocaust Museum shooter was 88.  Most were male, but not all; a 16-year-old girl shot 11 people in a San Diego schoolyard in 1993.

The Isla Vista shooter hated women. The Pulse Nightclub shooter hated gay men. The Buffalo and Charleston shooters hated Black people. The El Paso Walmart shooter hated Latinos. The Olathe bar shooter hated immigrants. The San Bernardino shooters hated Americans. The Tree of Life and Holocaust Memorial Museum shooters hated Jews. The Oak Creek shooter hated Sikhs. The Chapel Hill shooter railed against all religious people, and then killed three Muslim students he had menaced more than once before. The Knoxville Unitarian Church shooter hated liberals. The man who shot a Republican member of Congress and three other people on a Virginia baseball field hated conservatives. The Las Vegas shooter seems to have hated everyone. So did at least one of the Columbine shooters; the other seems to have hated himself more.

There were police or armed guards on the scene in several of these shootings. Guards were killed in the Holocaust Museum and Buffalo shootings. The police officer on duty at Parkland didn't seem to know what, if anything, to do. At Uvalde, armed law enforcement officers stormed the site and killed the shooter - and are still being criticized for not doing more.

The one thing all had in common was firearms, and we're not going to shoot our way out of this. We're not going to pray, punish, love, or hope our way out of it either. About a third of Americans own guns, and most never commit a crime with one. But depending on the poll and the proposed regulations, somewhere between half and four-fifths of us favor some additional regulation of firearms.

We can't read minds. Some people are angry and vengeful, and we can't force them to be happy. Some have a tenuous grip on reality, and we have no quick fix for that. Some people who are angry or out of touch with reality can hide their thoughts very, very well; some can't, but the people around them are in denial. Some people are habitually careless with their firearms. Some simply don't realize that a family member can figure out how to get to weapons they thought were secured or unavailable. And there are a lot of thoroughly-filled spaces between those extremes.

We can't solve those problems by ordering people to go to doctors, or to church, or to gun safety classes.
So: What are we going to do about it?

A few days ago, Senator Tom Umberg, Assemblymember Tom Daly, and I AGAIN sent a letter to the Anaheim City Council urging them to cancel the sale of the Anaheim Angels Stadium with the city and taxpayers in mind. The sale of the Anaheim Angel Stadium, which appears to have been fraudulently negotiated, was not in the best interest of the city or its taxpayers. I am thrilled by the news that the City Council voided the sales contract! 

I suggest the city of Anaheim look into buying the Angels baseball team. 

If Green Bay can own the Packers, Anaheim can own the Angels.

It is going to heat up now, the bad guys are getting removed and the good people are rising. We need to clean it up and then we need to put we the people back in charge.

It would be silly to stop dreaming now, the good guys are winning in Anaheim now, the good people have momentum. We need to keep moving ahead in a good way.

The corruption has been preventing us from doing good things here, and as we clean up the corruption then we can move forward with projects that make life better for the people here.

We need a high speed train between Anaheim and Vegas.

And we need to keep creating new Wellness Centers like the one in Orange, and we need to keep making progress on helping the homeless and the mentally ill.

And we need to build a bridge between Disney and the children of our community so that the children can dream of careers with Disney when they grow up. We need to build a bridge between the rich and the poor. We also need for the community colleges to train people for jobs at Disney, etc.

We also need to get the money into the hands of the poor people who need it, we have surpluses, and we need to transform those surpluses into food, shelter, healthcare, and education, for our people.

There are always simpletons who believe in panaceas for mental health - social clubs, churches, taking away smartphones and/or Xboxes , free hugs and stuffed animals, blowing up Facebook....think I've heard them all.  Yeah, maybe, if we do all those things and solve loneliness, alienation, paranoia, bad parenting, and impulsivity while we're at it.

Meantime: How about recognizing that humans cannot be trusted with anything more lethal than a pool noodle.
