Zoning laws and lack of incentives to build affordable starter homes are two causes.  AirBnB being allowed to muscle in to residential neighborhoods is another.   I mentioned others previously.

My son and I are strategizing ways for him to afford even rent where he presently lives, where they have doubled in the past four years.  He currently lives in an extended stay hotel, clean but very bare bones, as an affordable alternative while he searches.
