Title: Track and Field
Post by: Oiled on July 03, 2021, 10:54:45 AM
You all need a Track and Field category.

How is marijuana construed as.performance enhancing sports doping??   This woman just lost her mom,  wasn't engaged in competition,  and was in a state where mj is legal.   WTF?   Did the anti-doping agency fills its governing board with Puritans?   Any of them ever have a legal beer when a parent died?

So,  what,  if it's a favored drug of white people, like booze,  the anti-doping deacons look the other way?   And how on earth would smoking mj give you any unfair advantage in running FFS?

I think this issue is not finished. I hope reason prevails and she gets to run.

But I don't know that we need a Track and Field category... still, easy enough to do.

Might be a good add.  I notice in Golf a whole back we had a few posts on marathon runners in China.   In any case, thanks, Josh.

I also was ticked off by that decision,  not least because of a racist element that hearkens back to the Harry Anslinger days when he demonized racial minorities and immigrants for MJ use,  even as white men were falling down in the streets and/or beating up their families  from liquor.

I also objected when Michael Phelps got his bong suspension.  Athletes not in competition,  who don't use steroids or other actual PEDs, should be free to use legal recreational herbs and drinks.  If you forbid pot,  you must also forbid alcohol.   Then call it The Cotton Mather Olympics and make sure onanism and cursing are also punished!

Although you make some interesting points, if you know the rules, and you break the rules, you have to live with the consequences.

So, too bad, she'll have to live with it, and without grandma, too. That's called "life".

And, btw, dragging lines like "a favored drug or white people" into the conversation, is that a CRT requirement to post here?

The Anslinger tactic is well established fact.  When MJ use was predominantly in black communities, the government demonized it and specifically targeted it as black and immigrant depravity.   People were pointing this out long before anyone was talking about CRT.   Just answer his point:  was anyone suspended for having a drink when they weren't in competition?

You're the only one dragging some caricature of CRT into the discussion.

Are the rules wrong,  and is it possible they're based on historical biases from the early 20th century?   If an athlete can unwind with a beer or wine,  why can't they use MJ where it's legal?

No.  Most certainly not.

The rules are the rules, and they're well established. Athletes know them. Dragging CRT or alcohol use into it is just a feeble attempt to mask the FACT that the athlete broke the rules and a weak attempt to deligitimize the rules.

Yep

You let it go and then what?

Yep

Then more people use pot to relax from the pressures of their lives.

Oh, the horror.

It's not a PED. It's a LED - Life Enhancing  Drug - for some people.

Any other non-performance enhancing drug that is legal to use?

I'm a drug legalization advocate.  With a few exceptions I guess, I think all substances should be allowed for human consumption.

That said, I don't think ignoring the clearly established rule to excuse the violation of the rule, no matter how stupid that rule is, is fair to anybody else.  I suggest the rule change needs to come first.

I agree with that. But there is a distinction that can be argued.

So, you support the ruling, and not the rule.

Karl Marx was famous, but his sister Onya is rarely mentioned.

She invented the starting pistol.

So, racers are penalized for NOT being cruel to their dogs in a blizzard.  Brilliant.

Not that the average sports fan will notice, but
The World Athletics Championships began today in Eugene OR.
First time since they began in 1983 to be held in the US.

Saw a piece on one of the medal winners in her last competition.

I gather the organizers are still scrambling on operational issues.
