But - Lincoln's year notwithstanding - most times Senate and WH are of same party a nomination goes through - and most times it is NOT same party controlling it DOES NOT.  29 cases overall, I believe.

Unsurprisingly, you believe wrong.

In fact, when the President is a Republican and the Senate is controlled by Democrats, the nominee has gone through, unless there were serious issues with that nominee (ie. Bork) and even sometimes when there were (ie. Thomas)

The 29 number has to do with how many times a SCOTUS vacancy occurred during an election year.  And its wrong.

I was limiting it to election years.  Other cases aren't included in what I posted.  You may be right.  29 may be incorrect.  Check Ted Cruz's latest appearance on The View for that number.

Thanks, I'll pass.

The number is closer to a dozen, but its a distraction.  Bottom line is that the "precedent" argument is bullshit.  McConnell cited false precedent in 2015 (when Kennedy was confirmed by a Democratic Senate in 1988) and he is doing so now.

The "precedent" gets twisted to suit the purposes of Republicans.  And while there is a mountain of precedent for Democrats doing the right thing and accepting a Republicans nomination to SCOTUS, that will likely no longer happen.

More damage to our democracy via McConnell's rank partisanship.

Obviously NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has been pouring over the sad TV ratings for its  Championship series:
We’re completely committed to standing for social justice and racial equality and that’s been the case going back decades. It’s part of the DNA of this league. How it gets manifested is something we’re gonna have to sit down with the players and discuss for next season. I would say, in terms of the messages you see on the court and our jerseys, this was an extraordinary moment in time when we began these discussions with the players and what we all lived through this summer. My sense is there’ll be somewhat a return to normalcy, that those messages will largely be left to be delivered off the floor.

And I understand those people who are saying ‘I’m on your side, but I want to watch a basketball game.’

Which puts him ahead of you and Kid, since neither of you are on the same side as Silver.

I dont care about the NBA ratings or the messaging

Or BLM, we know.
Or, for that matter, BL.

If calling for equal application of the law regardless of race is so offensive to you that you can't watch a basketball game, Fuck You.

I'm not surprised that Adam Silver is unable and/or unwilling to deliver that message, but that's really all there is to it.

Anti-democracy. No surprise here, either.

No, no surprise, but such a bizarrely revealing way to state the issue.  Democracy thwarts liberty, peace and prosperity?  Look around the world, and tell me those things exist in greater abundance where there is minority rule.

Of course they don't.  So what he really means is peace and prosperity for me and mine, and fuck the rest.  Just bizarre that he would be that open about it.

I think Trump should do the HOLT town hall which has been offered, by the way

But my guess is an address to the nation is more likely to be on the schedule.

Given his phone call today, he should wait until the steroid is out of his system.

The man elected to be President of the United States openly calls for his Attorney General to prosecute his political opponents and it doesn't even elicit a shrug.  And that wasn't even the only disqualifying thing about that call.

We have just sunk so low as a nation.

It is true that Dems get the electoral college jump - with CA and NY

Another monumentally stupid take.

Democrats don't have an electoral college advantage.  If they did, we wouldn't have had two elections go the Republican's way in the last two decades despite their losing the popular vote.

Whatever you say this will appear to be Biden ducking a  third debate.

What does?  All three debates would still be scheduled.

Is there a reason Joe doesn't want to debate so close to the election?  Or do you think he DOES - and his people won't allow him to?

What the fuck are you talking about?  Biden could have either forced Trump to back out entirely on the second debate, or forced it to be remote.  Instead, his campaign was the one that suggested moving it closer to the election.

None of this is about Joe Biden trying to duck a debate.  All this is happening because Trump got COVID and holding a fucking Town Hall debate a little over a week after he leaves the hospital would have been idiotic.

America has a disturbing large number of ignorant toddlers who have never understood conditional freedom.

Is it a lack of understanding, or is it that they see "Civil Liberties!" as a bludgeon against their political opponents, much like they see the "Constitution!"

Because those very same people have no issues restricting the freedom of others to do what they please when it suits them.

Room for both, I'd say.   There are conniving partisans and gullible rubes,  both.

Maybe.  Just that I think even the most unsophisticated rube understands there are societal limits to one's personal freedoms.  You can't walk into a restaurant with no shirt on an expect to be served.

I think on a certain level most of the idiots protesting masks and other restrictions know that what they are doing is more about signaling support for Trump than standing up for "civil liberties."  I know that is certainly true of some of the rubes here.

"The [Commission on Presidential Debates] and the media cannot hide Joe Biden forever. Americans deserve to hear directly from both presidential candidates on these dates, October 22 and 29," Bill Stepien said in a statement.

These people are too-fucking-much.

Biden is doing Trump a huge favor giving him a platform he can (try to) use to change political momentum that obviously already heavily favors Biden, when Joe could have just insisted on a remote format that doesn't suit Trump's "debate" style.  And, btw, is risking his own health to do it.

So their response is to turn around and lie about the issue in order to insult...

Just assholes.

They aren't big on civil liberties

But the people who are fighting the restrictions that are intended to keep everyone safe sure are.

Which is why they plotted to kidnap Governor Whitmer.  Civil Liberties!

A plot egged on by Trump (Free Michigan!) and one that I bet you and Trump on some level will defend as justified.

“It’s not a heavy steroid,” Mr. Trump said of the heavy steroid he’s been taking, dexamethasone.

It will play fine for his followers. It will play poorly for his opponents.

As few "undecideds" as there may be, the movement in polling following the first debate (and Trump's COVID positive) shows that these things matter.

His skipping the debate will be seen as a continuation of his failures in the first (and as you say, for similar reasons) and will look all the more petulant given that he is being asked to operate in an environment that Americans have been operating in for seven months.

Repeating the mistakes that put him this hole is not what Trump needs to be doing 25 days before the election.  But maybe its all he knows how to do.

Meanwhile the undercard tommorrow night in Salt Lake City .....
There are so many ways to make Pence look foolish that the danger for Kamala Harris
is to hit him with too many.  She should pick three or four and then hammer him all night.
As for Pence interrupting the moderator or Harris, to please his master, I would think he might
try it once but that Harris will lay into the sad sack so fast Mike will drop his mic 🎤 in fear.

Hopefully the format has been adjusted and improved, but it will still not be a debate and may get
rather boring after the first 45 minutes or so.  Worth tuning into just to see how it starts out.

Prediction: Pence doesn't answer a single question with a clear, straightforward, unambiguous reply.
After 4 years of lying to please his master, it would take an act of courage far beyond Pence's
capabilities to muster.

Hate it when I am right.

Note:  Susan Page is a lightweight and was not up to the task.  The two minute response time with 15 second rebuttal is ridiculous and the moderator's  goal of jamming 9 topics into a tight time schedule, which Pence had no intention of following even though he agreed to the format, allows stonewalling and non-answers.
I would rather have a handful of topics actually covered even if that means the time schedule is not strictly followed.  And I would definitely allow direct questions from the candidates to the other.

After Pence's dodge on the climate question, Harris should have said "Susan, would you repeat your question, I don't think Mr Pence understood what you asked him!"

Agree totally.  Pence's insistence that it be noted that Harris didn't answer the court packing question was almost as audacious as his accusing her of playing politics with American lives, given that he had been evading questions all night.

And the climate change one wasn't the worst.  I imagine a lot of Americans interested in the response noted that he had nothing to say when asked for specifics on how the Trump Administration would maintain coverage for people with pre-existing conditions if they get their way on the ACA.  And the man wouldn't even commit to a peaceful transition of power when asked to!

I knew that Pence was a conservative radio talkshow host before he went into politics, but last night is the first I heard that he described himself then as "Rush Limbaugh on decaf."  Pence admitting he is a habitual and casual liar?  Has probably never said anything more true in his life.
