Among the things one can glean from the two maps is that while California is among the worst in the country in number of homeless per 1,000 residents, they are not that far above much of the rest of the country.

Conversely, when one shifts to look at the percentage of homeless not receiving shelter, California sticks out, far above the other states.

That's one takeaway.

This is especially evident when one looks at the chart on the right that illustrates the raw numbers of homeless sheltered and unsheltered in various cities. While NY has many more homeless than LA, LA's unsheltered dwarfs every other city.

NY has fewer unsheltered homeless than many places a 10th its size and less.

Meanwhile, in meaningful discussion:

Thoughts on this pair of charts?

Another woman accuses Cuomo.
Who is next, the Rockettes?

Hell if that happened he’d have as many accusations as the twice impeached, twice losing the popular vote former president.

Difference is he's IN OFFICE

Couldn't stay away.

LOL.

Looks at how anti-Trump conservatives are supporting democratization.

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2021/03/how-never-trumpers-are-becoming-pro-democracy-republicans.html

Any bill to expand voting rights would be subject to a filibuster and stand no chance of enactment in any form. Therefore, democratization requires eliminating or at least scaling back the filibuster, which is itself an impediment to democracy. Several anti-Trump conservatives, like Max Boot and David Brooks, have already endorsed this step.

Gary Schmitt, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and the former executive director of the neoconservative Project for the New American Century, has argued that the Senate filibuster prevents rather than enables deliberation and debate. Schmitt made this case four years ago and reiterated it last month.

If only the anti-Trump senators had gotten that far with any consistency.

Quote
So...you were 12 and called the kid in glasses “4 eyes.”  Everybody laughed and it was great fun.

Then you’re 30 and realize that calling people who wear glasses “4 eyes,” is not only not funny but can be hurtful.  You stop calling people who wear glasses “4 eyes.”

Dr Seuss Enterprises did basically the same thing.
~Jamie Lee

Of course, it wasn't funny when you were 12, either, but the GOP and their friends never figured that part out, either, and would call elimination of bulling "cancel culture," too.

A new book detailing the 2020 election claims that former President Barack Obama privately urged President Joe Biden not to run for the White House in 2020, and was "enamored" with one of his primary opponents.

"Obama's fears about Biden and his team ran deep — deeper than defeat," wrote Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes in their new book "Lucky: How Joe Biden Barely Won the Presidency," according to excerpts from The Washington Free Beacon. "Obama worried that his former vice president would embarrass himself on the campaign trail and that the people around him would not be able to prevent a belly-flop."

Pretty reasonable, given Joe's presidential trail track record.

Fortunately, whether Obama had those fears or not, Trump and the pandemic combined to put Biden over the top, despite glitches.

One of my students tripped across the abstract for this 2014 paper and shared it in our stats discussion as something he wanted to explore more.

Given our ongoing coal discussions, I thought that its exposure of a link between spontaneous abortion and coal burning stoves was interesting. Obviously, this is not about coal plants, though one certainly is inclined to then dig further, but the point about folks using coal to heat homes has been made as a reason to continue to make sure coal is available.

This suggests that perhaps it is instead a reason to replace those heating mechanisms!

Seasonal ambient air pollution correlates strongly with spontaneous abortion in Mongolia

..and our scholar to "teach us" its meaning.

"It" seems like an odd usage for Ward to have used, given that there are two bills, not one.

Or not, I suppose. Imprecision in language, with vague objections, tend to be his specialty.
