On Fultz -

Now the Magic are, in a sense, his team. He's the starting point guard and he looks relatively worthy of the promotion. He is incredibly strong with the ball, a quirky finisher; he has, relatively speaking, a Luka Doncic element to his game, rarely blowing by defenders but consistently establishing enough leverage to use his finishing strength and craftiness. He has a nice knack for getting defenders on his back as he methodically works the lane. He's a patient, last-second passer as he gets deep toward and even underneath the rim. His athleticism is known and yet still surprising when it shows up on the end of an almost lumbering probe

I'd like to have more than one fairly good season to go one before I handed out $18M deals that run for 4 years.

I didn't really see enough of Kennard or Fultz last year; what I did see was mildly promising.I like White and Onunoby, but those are rather generous deals you hope they grow into.

Part of the game is also managing your salary cap and not having bad contracts on your books.  I wouldn't be offering Franc $9M per.

Did you watch any bubble action?

White and Onunoby were two that really shined vs their previous play.

Obviously negotiations take place - and you don't wish a player you like to get to their RFA year - if the money is reasonable.  Ball wants the run of the league in terms of who he chooses to play for.  He wasnt signing.  OG and Derrick arent like that.  And got proper security pacts within reason for their team's budgets, allowing TOR and SAN to lock them in as building blocks .

Agreed.  Lets see who else does.  Part of a sign and trade?  Yeah, possible.

Meantime I want to see wins so I hope Frank helps some in that respect.

Re:  the offers - I do believe White and Onunoby, likely Kennard as well, would have gotten 4-70/80 offers after this year, yes.

White and Onunoby are two players I've liked for a couple years, been trying to keep an eye on.
Just the size of the contracts are a bit eye-popping.
I thought contracts were shrinking with all the uncertainty, shortened season, few if any fans, revenue significantly off, etc.

Just haven't seen DET much the past two years, and when I did it seemed everyone was injured.
Wooden Christian stood out last year obviously.

Nice surprise to see Batum start.
Smart all-around player, a fave of mine.

Montrezl played some horrendous D.
Can Lakes bench stop anybody.
Might need to move Ma Gasol to the 2nd unit, for defense and to limit his minutes.
Davis just needs to play C.

Kennard with a sore knee.  Lotta money for a backup with health issues, and no playoff experience.

Luke Kennard shoots .400 from 3, .863 from line

Shooting 0% this year ...
(I kiid)
Kennard has a nice offensive game -- solid passing and ballhandling to go with his shooting.  I get that.
Teams also go at him some on D where he's slow-footed.

At that coin, he needs to stay healthy and perform in the playoffs (and try to hold his own on D).

I guess Luke's extension doesn't kick in til next year, but vet min Batum ($2.5M) is starting and soon-to-be $18M Canard comes off the bench.  I'm not sure why Clips didn't just play Kennard at his $5.3M this year and let him become a FA next year, after having the info on well he played in LAC and how healthy he was

Were they really afraid that someone would swoop in and offer Kennard more than this $16M gamble extension?  It might work out fine, but I would have taken the risk next year, after seeing Luke as a Clip and how he performed in the playoffs.  Even if he does real well, worst case you have to up him to maybe $18M.  I'd have played it safe.

Reportedly Montrezl was pissed that CLips didn't want to pay him, but paid Kennard instead.

Batum and Reg Jax as vet min pickups = terrific and should pay real dividends.
Ty Lue likes to go 10 deep.  Pat Pat at $3M is mighty nice too, even if he is a creampuff defender.

My unfounded doomsday outlook takes hold on Day 2 of the NBA season:

Quote
The NBA said three Rockets players have returned tests that were either positive or inconclusive for Covid-19 under the NBA's testing program. Four other players are quarantined at this time following contact tracing.
Houston has one additional player who is unavailable due to an injury.

Because of this, the Rockets do not have the league-required eight available players to proceed with Wednesday night's game against the Thunder, the NBA said.

Some players are going to miss some games.
Better to have a deep team with some bench vets, instead of up to two weeks of being shorthanded.

Seems like a possible loophole.
Let's say LeBJ and AD test positive.
Then you just need 6 other players to say they had contact with them or are injured, so the team doesn't have a quorum and games are postponed, which is a better outcome than playing games without your stars.  Might have to look into some forfeits(?)

In any case, it's pretty easy to cancel games when there are no fans involved.

First game lets go NEW ORLEANS +3 at Miami

Zion shines in national light, Lonzo gains steam in national mindset - no Butler for Heat, though Herro will be a handful.
