I liked what SVG did in DET.
He took over a team that had won between 25-30 games for 5 years, after the glory years.
To build around young Drummond and KCP, SVG brought in some defenders (Joel Anthony for Will Bynum swap; drafted Stan Johnson).
Traded Singler and DJ Auggie for Reg Jax.  Drafted Dinwiddie in the 2nd round.
Unfortunately, StanJohn was a terrific defender, fast break finisher and athlete ... without an NBA ability to score.
(the 3 picks ahead of StanJohn were all marginal, but MyTurner and DevBook were the right calls)

Reg Jax looked ready to have a team of his own, but got injured a lot and just always made mental
mistakes on both ends.  Maybe injuries sapped his confidence/development.
RegJax - KCP - Stan John - ___ - Drummond
Looked like solid building blocks.  But Bulldog Drummond never dominated and was sluggish on D.
KCP a solid player but passive, not the borderline all-star they were hoping for.

In a heist, picked up Marcus Morris, Reg Bullox and took on Granger's hefty deal for a 2nd rounder 5 years out.
Picked up Ilyasova for old Caron Butler.  Traded Jennings and Ilyasova for Tobias Harris.
Reg Jax/Dinwiddie - KCP - StanJohn/Bullox - Marcus Morris/Tobias - Drummond/Baynes looks good
(but Reg Jax missed 30 games and the team regressed).

Added Ish Smith as a backup PG, blew a draft pick on supposed shooter Ellenson (#18 pick)
Drafted Kennard.  Traded Morris for A Very Bradley and signed Galloway to defend PG's,
preparing for RegJax missing time.

Stuck around .500, with KCP & Drummond not progressing, Reg Jax oft-injured, Stan John regressing,
DET hit the panic button and traded Tobias, A Very, and a 1st rounder (later ->Miles Bridges) for Blake Griffin.

Only two mistakes stand out, identifying Tobias but then trading him away.
Drafting Dinwiddie 2nd round but then moving on from him too soon.
Maybe if Reg Jax could have stayed healthy they could have been more patient at backup PG.
And kept Morris instead of bringing in Bradley.
Needed to keep one of Tobias/Morris.

It didn't work out, but I like most of the moves, until the Blake panic trade.
Reg Jax/Dinwiddie - KCP - StanJohn/Bullox - Marcus Morris/Tobias - Drummond/Baynes
That could have been a strong team . . .

Through 28 games, Wiggins has bought in on the defensive end. He is holding opponents to just 38.5% shooting, which ranks second behind only Utah Jazz guard Mike Conley among players who have defended a minimum of 200 field goal attempts this season, per NBA.com’s Advanced Stats. – via Wes Goldberg @ San Jose Mercury-News

The Warriors are holding opponents to 5.4 points per 100 possessions less when Wiggins is on the court, according to Cleaning the Glass, a target not reached by a Warriors wing since Iguodala in 2017-18. It’s worth noting that Iguodala and Wiggins are different kinds of defenders. Kerr relied on Iguodala for his versatility and anticipation, while Wiggins is used primarily as an on-ball stopper. – via Wes Goldberg @ San Jose Mercury-News

That was one crazy-ass Nets game.
PHX scored 74 first half points.  Nets were down 21 at the half.
Still down 20 halfway through the 3Q, then they won.

Nets scored 77 2nd half points.
And played some D.
Kyrie & KD were out.
Nets erased most of the lead with Harden sitting the first 7 minutes of the 4Q.
Unsurprisingly the D was much better with Harden and JoeHarris sitting.
Tyler Johnson hit many big 3's.  Jeff Green was good.

CP3 actually scored 17 4Q points to keep PHX in the lead.
PHX was up 8 with 2:30 left after a 30' CP3 trey.
Then they didn't score again.
Harden came back and finished PHX off, with 5 points in the last 2 minutes (his only 4Q points).

I always think when teams are up 20 in the 2nd half that they should guard the 3 point line tightly and force the other team to shoot inside.  Twos aren't gonna beat you easily, while a quick barrage of 3's can.  Similarly, teams up a lot tend to burn clock and take lazy 3's without pressuring the D.  If those don't fall, you let the other team back in it.  I'd run sets, get into the teeth of the D, and try to get easy looks, draw fouls or kick out for open 3's.  Use clock purposefully, instead of just dribbling far out.  Don't fall in love with 3's.  Try to compromise the D and have guys inside to rebound.  Most teams I see blow big leads start chucking and missing long low % shots.

I still don't trust Uncle Wiggy.
GS up 2 on CHA with 35 secs left and the ball.  Wiggins wastes time and heaves a 28' with 25 secs left.  Er... terrible shot.  Scurry was out, scratched just before tip-off, feeling sick.

GSW got the O-board, but Wanamaker got doubled and tied up before GS called timeout.
Kerr needed to call a quick timeout once the double got on Wanamaker.  Jump ball, Dray gets tossed when they give Hayward a timeout instead of another jump ball.  2 tech FT's by Rozier ties the game.
Rozier hits a buzzer beater for the win.  Scary terry with 20 4Q points and GSW let him get off a good look.  Gotta have a strong double on Rozier and make someone else beat you.

GSW was playing well mid/late 4Q and had an 8 point lead with 3:30 left.
Uber has turned around his season.  10 games in FEB on 20 / 6 / 2 on 49% / 47% shooting.

I liked the announcers who enjoyed the Paschall-PJ Washington 4Q battle.
Apparently those two battled working out for a number of teams, and PJW was drafted #12; Paschall #45.  So Pasch was just bullying PJ and really going at and around and through him.

Seems LaMel had a bad 1st half, but the 4Q I saw he was solid.  Popped a long 3, did a nice Curryesque snake dribble for a layup.  Tied up Wanamaker without fouling, which was a decisive play.  Then won the jump, sorta.

As a quick SG with handle, Rozier has gone all Lillardputian lately.
Last 4 games averaging 36 Pts on 60% FG & 59% on 3's.
For the seaosn, Rozier averaging over 20 ppg on 49 / 45 / 80 splits.

Wiz been playing well.
Won 5 of 6 mostly against good teams since a loss to the Knicks.
But Rustbrook remians highly erratic.

Watching the 4Q of CHI-PHX, to get my Bulls bearings.

ZackLavie returns around the 8 min mark.
Gets the ball late and doesn't get his 3 off before the shot clock.
Drives and misses a tough layup over two defenders (Kornet! slams back the miss, so sort of a Kobe pass).  A miss but shifted the D, so Chi got the O-board putback.
ZLV bad pass turnover.
ZLV drives and loses his dribble.
ZLV drills a 3.
ZLV drives directly into Booker and loses the ball.
Then doesn't get back on D and exhibits poor body language.

This is what I often see from ZLaV.  Forcing things, sloppy play, some deadly shooting.  Pouty.

4 mins left.  4 Point Suns lead.  Was 4 point Bulls lead when Z returned.

Edit: well it turned into a 32-16 4Q with the Bulls limping into a loss.
Zack had three 4Q turnovers.  Coby 2.  Postgame Tom Chambers (looking great) said ZlaVie was leading the League in crunchtime scoring.  But this was a forgettable effort.
Coby White also tried to make things happen and turned the ball over a bunch when he wasn't getting blocked.  Ayton had a great 4Q, blocking and scoring.

For the game Suns finished 35 assists to 7 turns.
Bulls 25 assists and 17 turnovers.

Kornet went 3-3 on 3's in the 3Q, but I only saw his 4Q airball.
Finished with 11 points on 4-5 FG, 5 boards and 3 blocks in just 12 mins.
Always liked Kornet.  Hopefully that effort will get him more minutes.

Lebron responds to a particularly ill-timed attack on his off court activity.

"There’s no way I would ever just stick to sports, because I understand how powerful this platform and my voice is."

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/sports/lebron-james-responds-zlatan-ibrahimovic-telling-him-stay-out-politics-n1259068

Ill-timed since it came just as players' power was demonstrated again — the racist bitchwitch from Georgia, Kelly Loeffler, booted out of the league by her own players... players who could justifiably be credited with giving Dems control of the Senate

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/02/26/kelly-loeffler-senator-sells-wnba-atlanta-dream/

More power to 'em all....

Speaking of ill-timed, this really was precious:

I don't hear many calls for IQ to replace Elf as the starting PG anymore.

If you ever don't, it's just cause it's so damn obvious, folks don't need to shout themselves hoarse about it anymore. That said, here's as simple as it gets:

https://www.theringer.com/nba/2021/2/26/22303166/immanuel-quickley-new-york-knicks

Quickley complements the other starters better than Payton. The latter is a traditional floor general who is at his best when he can control the tempo of the game and run the offense. But that’s what Randle and Barrett want to do. Those two don’t need another playmaker. They need someone like Quickley who can open up the floor and be a release valve in the half-court offense. Payton, who is shooting 24.1 percent from 3 on 1.8 attempts per game, destroys the spacing of a team that never had much to begin with. And while he’s a better defender than Quickley, Barrett and Bullock can handle the tough assignments on that end of the floor.

The fit between Randle, who was just named to his first All-Star game, and Quickley is most important. Randle is a point forward who is averaging career highs in touches (82.2 per game) and assists (5.5). His ability to run point at his size means that a point-guard-sized shooter like Quickley doesn’t have to. It’s a perfect blend of skills. The lineup numbers indicate that the two should be playing together all the time:

Quickley and Randle
Combination   Minutes   Net Rating
Randle + Quickley   252   plus-13.6
Randle + no Quickley   954   minus-1.7

That said, I'm in no hurry! I figure Thibs has his reasons, whether it be preferred development pace, trade showcasing ALF, desire for a certain kind of second unit..It's all good, the pleasures of the present are many — including that delicious Quick-Frank-Burks combo.

CHA stole two games in a week.
A late comeback v. PHX including Hayward fouling Booker on a game tying 3-point attempt as time expired.  No foul called, but clearly one upon replay.

last night v. SacKings, CHA down 8 with 1:13 left.  Fox steals the inbounds pass and LaMelo gets called for a flagrant foul with 1:09.  Up 8 a minute left, 2 FT's and the ball back.  And Sacto loses!  Fox misses a pair of FT's.  Bagley will miss a pair soon after, then Hield go 1-2.  1-6 FT's in the last 1:09.  A losing formula.

Luke might be on the hot seat if Kings keep folding in bad ways.  The team just does dumb things.  Early 4Q CoryJoe crosses halfcourt and then passes to Bjelica who jumps into the frontcourt and is called for a backcourt violation.  Why give the ball to Bjelica around halfcourt?  Why not make sure he's over the line?  Just dumb plays every time I see Kings.  Usually TyH steadies them but he was out with a mild calf strain.  What team needs a rook to steady things?

I really thought Luke would be a good coach, but every time I see SacKings they don't look coherent.  Fox - Hields - Barnes - Holmes - Bagley.
That's a very athletic good scoring group.  Get them to play hard and smart and some D.  A solid bench of TyH, CoryJo, Bejelica, Jabari (DaQuan and Pelle).
Underperforming team.  Lose winnable games.

Otoh, credit CHA for scrapping to almost .500.
PJ Wash scored 42.  Was just dominant.  Bagley can't allow guys to tee off on him like that.

The WNBA franchise the Atlanta Dream, which had been co-owned by former U.S. Sen. Kelley Loeffler of Georgia, has been sold, the league announced Friday afternoon.

The three-member investor group which purchased the team includes former Dream player Renee Montgomery, making her the first retired player to become both an owner and a WNBA executive.

https://www.npr.org/2021/02/26/971877660/wnba-team-co-owned-by-ex-sen-kelly-loeffler-is-sold-after-players-criticism

The sale of the Dream had been anticipated for some time. Current players, many of them Black, for months had publicly criticized Loeffler for her attacks on the Black Lives Matter movement.

Good riddance.
