In 1855, the Speaker selection dragged on for two months, with 133 ballots.

Partly due to poor cellphone reception back then.

George Santos seems like the logical compromise Speaker choice.

Maybe the Dems should all switch their votes to Donalds. "All right, you caught the car. Now what?"

The thing is if McCarthy does get Speaker, he will have done so by mortgaging his testicles to the most extreme members of his party. Which will effectively prevent him from doing all the things a speaker should be doing if the party is at all interested in governing. Which it really is not, but there will come a time when he will need to weild power and will not be able to do so. As in, for instance, when votes to keep the government running come up.

By the way, when I was typing about McCarthy.s testicles my Droid kept defaulting to the singular. What does Samsung know and how do they know it?

  :)

Agree with Yankguy that Santos is the best choice, given his past experience as President of France, International Criminal Court prosecutor of Rudolf Hess, and having the Rhodes Scholarship.

Time to nut up.

Given his track record, I think he can feign fealty to the lunatic fringe and then walk that back in baby steps and by the time they notice he will be entrenched.

Except he has agreed that one person can call for his ouster. And if you not think that fringe will do it, think again.

It is good to have extreme voices, left and right, in Congress. It is even good to listen to them now and again. But you should never give them power over you. Especially since some of the far right view the Democrats as their opponents but the likes of McCarthy as their enemy.

In the Bakersfield tradition McCarthy has become a head of lettuce.

2023 looks better than any year before of becoming the year of the platinum coin.

More ominous predictions about Tesla sales.

MarketWatch reports that Tesla has missed its target for car deliveries in the final quarter of 2022, leading analysts to speculate about possible issues with demand for the its electric vehicles. According to a statement on Monday, Tesla delivered 405,278 cars in the final  three months of 2022  but fell short of the estimates for the quarter at 431,117.
This marks the first time that Tesla has failed to meet analysts expectations for car deliveries and has led to concerns about demand for the Tesla EVs.
These concerns have been exacerbated by Tesla s recent decision to slash prices for many vehicles, implying that the company is struggling to sell its cars.
This is a significant shift since the company has notoriously had to handle years of backlogged purchase requests as production increased. Analysts have also highlighted Tesla s increasing competition in the Chinese EV market, where many other manufacturers are vying for market share.

I think Jeffries should go to McCarthy and say "if you back away from those deals you made with the lunatics, we can toss you enough votes to make you Speaker.  Of course, we want Majority seating on Ways and Means and Judiciary committees."

It is good to have extreme voices, left and right, in Congress. It is even good to listen to them now and again. But you should never give them power over you. Especially since some of the far right view the Democrats as their opponents but the likes of McCarthy as their enemy.
Obviously the budget hardliners already have power over McCarthy.
Or he would be Speaker.
The overriding issue,though, is spending.
McCarthy is not trusted to hold the line on spending.
The way Congress works is to authorize spending, then appropriate money for those authorized expenditures, and then to authorize the Treasury Department to issue debt in order to pay for that appropriated money.
Raising the debt ceiling has been done 78 times in the last 60 years and it does not relate to which party is in power. Congress has always found a way to avoid a world financial crisis with band aids, etc., each time.

This faction , now that the GOP controls the House, wants to change business as usual, a debate the democrats avoided with its lockstep reaction to leadership orders.

It is most likely not going to be resolved until the stock market crashes and the kids in Congress have to grow up.
