The probability that such a shift may occur during this particular Congress may well be even higher than that. At the moment, no fewer than six Democratic senators over the age of 70 represent states where a Republican governor would be free to replace them with a Republican, should a vacancy occur.

Five other Democratic senators represent states for which a vacancy would go unfilled for months, until a special election to fill the seat was held — which would hand the G.O.P. control of the Senate at least until that election and likely for the rest of the current Congress if a Republican wins that contest. (In the case of Wisconsin, such a vacancy might not be filled until 2023.)

All things considered, the odds that Democrats will lose control of the Senate in the next 22 months are probably close to a coin flip.

Just signed up for a monthly donation to

I will donate.   Just been reading Bill McKibben ("Falter") on the Kochs and their many successes with vote suppression.  When the mike's turned off,  they and their ilk are fairly open about converting democracy to a system where the parasite non-wealth-creators have no vote and the wise plutocrats rule.

Congrats to Secretary Deb Haaland.

America got a little greater again today, again despite ineffectual republican resistance.

I wish Ms Haaland well,  and applaud her resolve to protect our public lands from predatory short-term profiteers.

I won't say "Achtung, baby!" since that appears to be a trigger.

Lets say, "Don't be schtupid be a schmarty, come and join the Nazi Party!"

"The Navy launched its own internal inquiry after Hale-Cusanelli was arrested in January, and nearly three dozen of his colleagues shared stories of his alleged racist and bigoted comments. Prosecutors highlighted the Navy's findings in a filing advocating for his continued detention.

One of Hale-Cusanelli's supervisors told investigators that he would walk up to new colleagues and ask, "You're not Jewish, are you?" A petty officer claimed they heard him say, "Jews, women, and Blacks were on the bottom of the totem pole." Another contractor at the base said Hale-Cusanelli told them that Jewish people "are ruining everything and did not belong here," according to the filing.

In a shocking revelation, prosecutors said Hale-Cusanelli came to the base last year sporting a distinctive mustache that resembled the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. One of his supervisors told the Navy investigators that they confronted Hale-Cusanelli about his apparent "Hitler mustache."

Another naval officer recalled that Hale-Cusanelli said, "Hitler should have finished the job."

Really hard to fathom Reeves thinking here,  unless he believes that the fed money will vanish one day and send them spiraling into deficits,  or is taking some sort of Libertarian stand that... well,  would seem to be predicated on suppressing at least fifty percent of voters.

Seems dumb on multiple levels.

The center-right in this country has staked out its position on taxing, spending, and the filibuster.

It’s both bigly smart and smartly big.

Speaking of bad policy, here’s a nice autopsy of the biggest right wing ripoff scheme,

President Biden announced last week that the United States will have enough vaccines for every American adult by the end of May. Other rich nations will soon follow suit, having purchased enough doses to inoculate their populations many times over. Lower-income countries, however, have yet to find a pathway to herd immunity anytime soon. Indeed, experts say that without significant policy changes, poor countries may not be vaccinated against covid-19 until 2023 or 2024.

We must make critical changes now to fix this inequity and avert a public health disaster. Vaccinating everyone around the world is not just a moral imperative. With variants of the novel coronavirus first found in Brazil, South Africa and Britain already spreading in the United States, it is clear global vaccination is necessary to end the pandemic.

At the World Trade Organization on Wednesday, the United States and a small number of wealthy countries with ready access to vaccines blocked a proposal by India and South Africa to temporarily waive countries’ obligation to enforce patents on covid-19 technologies, including vaccines, during the pandemic. The Biden administration should drop its objection, and WTO members should pass the waiver — quickly.

I recall an analysis a couple years ago, that found an interesting trend:  in 1960, CEO income was about 20 times the company's average worker pay.   It's now around 280 times.
