Sleepy Joe spilled the beans Wednesday.
Was anybody paying attention?

The United States accounts, as all of you know, for less than 15 percent of carbon emissions. The rest of the world accounts for 85 percent. That’s why I kept my commitment to rejoin the Paris Accord, because if we do everything perfectly, it’s not going to matter."
( New York Times transcript)

So we cut our emissions and help hold other nations to the same goal so that we DO matter.

LOL!
So we left the Paris Accords, significantly  cut our emissions through more efficient use of fossil fuels,
AND put people to work who grew our Economy!

China thumbed its nose and built a gazillion coal plants with more to come.

Get real.

And green cannot be idiotically reduced to one measure like electric cars.

Obviously since cars add next to nothing to climate change.
If people want electric cars fine.
But don’t throw auto workers out of jobs to do so when it  will help tank the economy for no conceivable result on a pie-in-the-sky climate fantasy.

More than nothing.   Vehicles are one fifth of our emissions in the US.

LOL    Not passenger cars.  96% of the day they sit, using no energy.
Electric Cars use energy when they are charging. (Idle)
The net effect of electric cars, tomorrow, replacing passenger cars is a net energy LOSS.

The International Energy Agency in 2016 estimated that if 50% of all new cars were electric, petroleum use would continue to grow because of “trucks, aviation and the petro-chemical industry and we don’t have major alternatives to oil prod-ucts there.

I believe Lao Tzu said "a journey of a 1,000 miles begins with a single step,

then Henry Ford amended it to say, a journey of a 1,000 miles starts with a topped off gas tank.

Today as Red curses the future, Elon Musk says a journey of 1,000 miles requires a network of charging stations for EV, which is cleaner technology that doesn't pollute the air our children breathe.

We need to make Carly Simon our Ambassador to Afghanistan.

Joni Mitchell can be the Ambassador to Iraq.

Goldie Hawn can be our Ambassador to Iran.

The Middle East can have a Summer of Love.

We can send Fleetwood Mac to Saudi Arabia.

California can send wine and weed to the Middle East and to Afghanistan.

We can put Barbi Benton as our Ambassador to Lebanon.

And just for the fun of it, Afghanistan should grow flowers for the flower shops in the Middle East, they can grow and sell flowers. Flower children to the fullest.

Salute,

Tony V.

We build domestic supply chains for batteries,  and equipment to pop them in and out when cars "refuel" at battery swap stations.  We build domestic supply chains for electronic control units.   We build domestic supply chains for hydrogen cracking,  for fuel cells.   Etc.   All these things draw on skills that automotive workers and engineers possess,  and open up new areas for professional growth.

There will be fewer auto mechanics,  and that's because EVs tend to break down less.   And who benefits from vehicles that need less repair?   That's a long list,  which I'll summarize as:  everybody but auto mechanics and salvage yards.

Auto mechanics,  like coal miners,  do need retraining and career transition options.   Just as livery workers and farriers and nosebag knitters once did.

And,  as the article  noted,  consumers haven't complained about the fact that newer gas cars now require less maintenance than they used to.   The reduction in employed mechanics is already underway,  simply due to the fact that technologies mature.

So really,  the contrarian case boils down to:  Let's have our machines be shitty, and emit noxious gases,  so that we can have the maximum number of workers fixing them or getting mass quantities of dead fern juice to them.

When have consumers ever rallied behind that maxim??

There will be far fewer  American workers supporting an industry that has little to no effect on climate change.

I had hoped that Scott might show some common sense, but it seems clear he is little more than an oreo with no real principles," Lamar County Democratic Party chair Gary O'Connor wrote in a now-deleted Facebook post, referring to Scott’s rebuttal to President Biden's Congressional address on Wednesday.

There may be more American workers who understand building an older, less efficient and polluting product may not be the path to the future. And we should not seed that future to more visionary countries. They may also see the benefit to their kids and grand kids not breathing poison.

YMMV
