Larry

I won my college residential area "Risk" competition, but I'm reasonably sure its doesn't make me a a great candidate for Sec of State or 5-Star General.

Your limp rebuttals using your resume to fend off valid arguments are fucking funny as hell and totally irrelevant.

"Jeopardy" that was some very funny shit.

You need to take a nap Larry.

I think fac takes over when Larry naps. That way, their idiocy continues 24/7.

You call me a dummy, do you have a Jeopardy!

I'll take "Hyperthymesia" for $600, Alex. Oh, wait---forgot you were dead.

Being able to recall trivia is limited to essentially one kind of intelligence.

There are many people who know all the ins and outs of the game of baseball, but they've never actually played the game.

Rain Man knew what airlines not to fly. Did you want him piloting the plane?

Think about it. Because as far as this conversation on politicking goes, your not well positioned to win the argument.

Speaking of politics, would you like to make comparisons between us based on our experiences or by our ability to learn, file and access information, trivia or otherwise?

Either way your out of your depth.

How do you like playing side kick to a guy who despises you?

The only thing you have in common are your futile attempts to convince yourselves you somehow are better than anyone else in here.

I think Larry deserves some slack, the meds for back surgery probably knocked him on his ass.

Larry posted a D-day tribute yesterday and it reminded me of some WW2 stuff I discovered about a year ago related to my dad's service aboard a US Navy Destroyer Escort (DE 146) in the North Atlantic from 1943-1946. I do not think I ever posted this stuff in Elba, but its pretty cool stuff.

I'll post just the first post and a link to the thread on SoSH for those who care to see how it developed. But LSS recalling some old war stories my dad had passed on, a good memory, and a lot of time to waste, I following internet rabbit holes and found naval vet websites, US Govt docs, pictures (including of my dad) and declassified US Navy war diaries of DE 146 activities for about 2 years. The most riveting diary involved the sinking of a German sub, U490, that was sunk on June 11, 1944, 5 days after D-Day, and 77 years ago. It really was an amazing internet experience.

The thread's title was:

June 11, 1944 my dad sunk a Nazi sub.

all the links are safe for work and are legit.

And for those so inclined, the war diary runs 13 pages and can be more easily read with the tools on the gov't website.

https://www.sonsofsamhorn.net/index.php?threads/june-11-1944-my-dad-sunk-a-nazi-sub.30642/

A few months ago there was thread in Omar (EDIT- a SoSH movie thread) about an upcoming Tom Hanks movie, Greyhound, about WW2 and the submarine warfare in the North Atlantic. And I posted in the thread about my dad being on a Destroyer Escort (DE 146) USS Inch, from 1943-46, and seeing action in the North Atlantic from 1943-45. So as dad passed away 19 years ago (he'd be 102 in July if still alive) I only have the memories of his brief descriptions to me as a young child of his war experiences. And he probably didn't tell his young son all the good stuff, But he told me some.

But that thread got me to thinking and fucking A there is the internet and data bases, and I've got time on my hands, and from googling and searching I found pictures of his boat and photos of the crew where I can make out my dad as a young officer circa 1943.

But there is one diary reporting in detail the sinking of a German U-boat U-490, on June 11-12, 1944. The U-boat was sunk about 100 miles north of the Azores, and the crew of 60 were all rescued and taken aboard the Inch for interogation.

https://catalog.archives.gov/id/78591088

76 years ago to the day.

To read this was a fucking rush.

I may post more later, or not, but it was pretty cool.

Love you Dad.

Of course not.

The worst Risk player in the world can beat the best because of how much luck is involved.

The game of Diplomacy is a totally different question and if you won those consistently, you might have the chops for doing something for State.

Still not for the military.

If a player could role 6s, they could rule the world. But as luck is as random as a roll of fair die, and there were strategic choices, the better player had an edge over a dolt, given a large enough game sample.

Never played Diplomacy, and haven't played Risk or Stratego, which I last played with my kid, in about 15 years.

Fun games.

WBW I enjoyed Strato-o-Matic baseball and was decent at it. I'm almost positive I could have been as good as Grady Little.

As we open back up and get our freedom back, people can put teams of volunteers together and they can raise money for the charity of their choice by selling beer and hot dogs and stuff at sporting events, and at concerts, etc. A friend and his group raised money for Canning Hunger to feed hungry people.

Groups such as Kiwanis, and Knights of Columbus, and other groups, can get together to raise money for charity by selling hot dogs and beer and stuff at sporting events, etc.

And as people are fed, then ALL people can be fed, it does not matter your race, or sex, or religion, or whatever, people need to team up to raise money to feed all people who are hungry.

Salute,

Tony V.

But that's his call.

Take a step back. You're the one talking shit

congrats on Jeopardy but how is that relevant to someone legitimately criticizing an opinion you had in this forum?

Larry it holds no relevance.

And its a laughable rebuttal

Literally.

And Larry your ROTC service is admirable, but you're not coming off like Gen Colin Powell, but rather more like Doug Neidermeyer.

and we all know how he ended up.

LMAO

Enough with back surgery and meds bullshit. I was on Flexeril and Acetaminophen.
I’m more lucid than you on my worst day.

Since you mention the war:

My Dad tried to enlist in the US Navy right after Pearl Harbor but he could only be a Stewart or mess hand. As per his personality he was like, “Fuck that! If I’m going to war I’m not gonna killed washing dishes.”

He went to the National Maritime Union and signed up for the Merchant Marine. He served in merchant ships for the duration of the war. 3.1 million tons of merchant ships were lost in World War II. Mariners died at a rate of 1 in 26, which was the highest rate of casualties of any service.

Dad survived floating mines, wolf packs of German U boats air attacks from the Luftwaffe and Japanese. In 1944 he signed on for the “Murmansk Run” and after making it through the frozen hell on earth, he and his shipmates kissed the dock in Dundalk and “shoved off to the nearest bar.”

When they hit the bar the bar tender said, “we don’t serve them here!” Meaning my Dad.
He told me, That’s when I knew I was truly home.” His ship, the Thomas Donaldson was like all of the Merchant Marine, integrated and by the time of the Murmansk run he’d seen action in the Mediterranean and Pacific so he was a crusty old vet at age 22.

1n 1985 he was granted veteran status.

In 1992 I accompanied my Dad to Baltimore on a visit to the Liberty Ship John W Brown as he and remaining survivors of the Murmansk (Russia) convoys the most dangerous and costly convoy runs of the war.

The documentary about his family, “Secret Daughter” is worth the watch.
