What happened at Charlottesville gave a clue as to what's going on today, but obviously nobody much took any notice.
It was shown on tv that some people were allowed to vote 3 times in the election.
That is enough for some people to call "foul" on the election.
Maybe they'll fix the election process for next time.

I do not know about "come to". The right wing attempt to take over the concept of patriotism and to tie it to their narrow political views, the co-opting of symbols like the flag and politicizing them to cancel liberals has been going on for as long as I can recall.
