I think the Overton Window has shifted to the point that GOP politicians are now tossing out policy ideas that would have seemed too extreme to mention a few years ago.  And tolerating behavior they used to cringe more publicly at.   It's like the human capacity for embarrassment is being eroded severely.

When I worked for the Burbank YMCA as a teen at a summer camp by Tehachapi, I was in charge of the water system, and I used to go to the water tank everyday, and there was a lady who trained for the Olympics who used to meet me at the tank.

The lady was an Olympic gymnast, and she used to jog through the canyon at the same time I went up to the tank, and we would have a cigarette together at the tank. She was awesome, and she was a dedicated athlete with dreams of winning gold medals.

But, then the Olympics were boycotted, it was the 1980 Olympics and the Olympics were in the USSR that year, and the USA boycotted the Olympics for political reasons. So she did not get to participate in the Olympics, so sad. She worked hard, and then she never got to compete in the Olympics.

It was cool to get to hang out with an Olympic gymnast everyday, she was cool, and it was sad that the USA boycotted the Olympics and she did not get to participate.

Bill Walton was a Deadhead, probably before your friend was a teen! And a pretty famous one.

Walton is particularly attached to the Grateful Dead, whose concerts he started attending in 1967, while he was still in high school. He attended more than 850 Grateful Dead concerts, including traveling with the band to Egypt for its famous 1978 performance before the Pyramids (joining the band on drums), and quotes Grateful Dead lyrics in TV and radio interviews. To fellow Deadheads, Walton is fondly known as "Grateful Red" and the "Big Red Deadhead" and "World's Tallest Deadhead". In the video for "Touch of Grey", Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart is wearing a Celtics jacket given to him by Walton. In 2001, Walton was inducted into The Grateful Dead Hall of Honor.
