All the culture war also obscures deeper questions of how best to have police in communities, e.g. should officers be required to be residents of the neighborhoods they patrol?   Instead of having real substantive conversations on what police can do most effectively and where, it's propaganda and memes and sound bites. 

I'd start with clarifying what "defund" means when any official says it.  There's a clear difference between reallocating funds to non-armed social worker officers, or to mental health specialists, and just reducing funds across the board.  If Congress isn't developing that conversation, and drawing in state/local people, then I would agree that they deserve some blame for slow or failed reforms.

A federal judge has blocked the Biden administration from enforcing a mandate on several religious organizations that would have required them to perform gender transition surgeries or abortions.

Judge Reed O’Connor of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas permanently blocked the Biden administration from applying the mandate to all plaintiffs in the case. Those plaintiffs include the Franciscan Alliance, a Catholic hospital system that operates twelve hospitals in Indiana and Illinois, in addition to numerous other health facilities in those states.

The administration may not enforce the mandate on plaintiffs “in a manner that would require them to perform or provide insurance coverage for gender-transition procedures or abortions,” O’Connor wrote in his ruling.

“No doctor should be forced to perform controversial, medically unsupported procedures that are contrary to their conscience and could be deeply harmful to their patients,” Luke Goodrich, vice president and senior counsel for religious freedom advocacy group Becket, said in a statement. Becket provided counsel for plaintiffs in the case.




The Obama administration attached a mandate to the Affordable Care Act in 2016 stating that health care providers must perform and provide insurance coverage for gender transition surgery. The mandate interprets the ACA non-discrimination clause, known as Section 1557, to cover transition surgery and does not provide a religious exemption for providers.

Will let others reply to that, because I want to digress to a side issue which is this:  why must people's sexual identity be so tied to their anatomy in this rigid way??  In some cultures, few feel the need to go the surgical route, because people accept them more as they are.  Some tribal cultures even honored them.  If it was okay to be a chick with a dick, then maybe fewer would feel they need the surgery option to satisfy some social pressure as to what a woman must be.  I mean, sure, if you must lop the thing off and take hormones to get more into that girly feeling you have, go for it.  But I suspect some make the choice because everything is presented in this binary, anatomy-based, way.  And might, in a perfectly free and accepting environment, only opt for part of the total package, e.g. just take hormones to stop the beard and the shouting at bad drivers, but not necessarily change the plumbing.  The whole either/or seems too rigid.

We have no idea what the majority sees. It was a Razzmussen poll. As statistically demonstrated last fall, their "polling" results verge on the absurd from time to time - once is feasible, but repeated 8% shifts back and forth in single days just doesn't happen.

In Florida, the Miami-Dade school system is the fourth largest school district in the nation. When Superintendent Alberto Carvalho made it clear that he will follow the guidance of public health experts and doctors, DeSantis threatened to withhold the salaries of any superintendents or school board members who defy his executive order prohibiting mask mandates.

Carvalho issued a statement saying “At no point shall I allow my decision to be influenced by a threat to my paycheck; a small price to pay considering the gravity of this issue and the potential impact to the health and well-being of our students and dedicated employees.”

My guess is that the reason a majority see the Squad and other new Democrats as denigrating law enforcement is because they are absorbing the narrative of the Right, promoted widely on social media and right-leaning media outlets.  If you actually listen to what the new Dems are saying, it doesn't quite fit that narrative, but who has time to read or research, 'miright?  Just go with the soundbite!

Marco Rubio wants the government to stop helping people, because he says he wants people to go back to work. It is ironic, because Rubio probably has never done a real job in his life, he has been spoiled and pampered. Let him lay concrete for 16 hours a day, or pick strawberries in the fields for 12 hours a day, or wash dogs for 12 hours per day. Marco Rubio does not know what it is like to go hungry, or to toil to the point of exhaustion to pay for food and shelter. In any case, we must not go back to business as usual, we need to transform our work-force.

We need to use this time to convert our work-force over to home-based jobs from home offices. We need to get people out of their cars and off of the roads. And also it is good for the children to have their parents at home. We need to create as many home based jobs as possible.

We also need to better educate our society, this is a perfect time.

Marco Rubio is not one to be telling people to work, when he has probably never done an honest days hard labor in his life.

On the issue of hard labor, live better and work UNION.

And we need to make our immigrants legal, these are the good people who really work hard, they are working in the fields growing our food, we need to make them legal citizens. They deserve to be legal citizens. Rubio needs to stand up and help the people who really do the hard work, we need to make our immigrants legal.

The reconciliation bill is moving through the Senate and if Moderate Democrats in the House and Senate don’t fuck this up and pass these into laws mostly intact it will be tough on GOP to run on economic issues.
