The idea that LEDE is the proper term is entirely a misguided opinion of Barton. Lede never was invented as an option until 1970.
Just a cursory history of Journalism finds centuries of the usage of LEAD.

It dates back to 1965, as it turns out, but it is certainly modern coinage, as with many other words.

Of course, the other spelling is oh so much more legit, going back roughly as long before lede as lede is old, now! Early 20th century is the first usage I am aware of (1913), though perhaps it might go back as much as 20 years before that - no evidence thus far supports it in the 19th century.
