NPR has generally polled as one of the most trusted news sources, through the last couple decades. And they did the right thing, having the Public Editor fact check Totenberg's story and supply correction. Roberts suggested, but did not ask. No one was impugned, and they stand by sources that say Roberts did suggest mask wearing, after Justice Sotomayor expressed concern about entering chambers. And the fact that all but Gorsuch donned masks after the break (when only one justice masked before the break) does indicate that some message was relayed.
Totenberg said she has multiple, solid sources familiar with the inner workings of the court who told her that Roberts conveyed something to his fellow justices about Sotomayors concerns in the face of the omicron wave. Totenberg said her NPR editors were aware of who those sources are and stood by the reporting...
I find no reason to doubt those sources. NPR has been transparent about the problems with the original report.
