Today, 7/1/2022, in Virginia, SB36 went into effect whereby ALL behavioral incidents at school are to be reported to the police. There are no exceptions for disabled children or disability behaviors.

My high supports needs, ID, autistic son had a meltdown on the bus this morning, 7/1/2022. Rather than working with him and calming him through the incident, the school district instructed the bus driver to call Fairfax County Police. I was just called to pick up my son, the bus stopped in the middle of a busy intersection with rush hour traffic all around, surrounded by police cars, and police telling me the bus attendant hasn't yet decided on whether or not she'll press charges for assault and battery on my disabled son.

My son was terrified and had no idea what was happening. He didn't understand why his bus wasn't taking him to school, or why there were cop cars with lights flashing all around him, why he was surrounded by strangers and police. He sat alone, strapped into a bus with no air-conditioning, when it's humid and probably at least 90F on his bus.

This is acceptable treatment for a high support needs disabled child to my county and state. They didn't safely clip him into his seat and now he may pay for it legally.

That's why we screamed about this law and tried to stop it from passing. Here we are, day 1 of enforcement of SB36, and my disabled son might be looking at assault charges. He has no way to convey his side of the story. Why his seat strap wasn't locked. What was done or said to him or what sensory issues that might have set him off. I know being on a hot as hell bus with all windows closed for someone with intense sensory issues isn't ever a real good plan.

Day 1 of officially criminalizing disability, and I got that phonecall from the police all caretakers of people like my son dread.
Fortunately they didn't cuff or detain him THIS time because he was cooperative. What happens the next time if he's not?

Elections have consequences. Fuck every single fascist fuck who voted for these fascist fucks holding every lever of power in our state now. 65% of incarcerated minors are disabled. It's laws like SB36 that criminalize disability and race, and incarcerate people for being born disabled.

I could agree with Dr Dodes on Trump's competency to stand trial, but it is never clear to me where the line between sociopath and heartless selfish bastard really lies.  I think it makes people feel better if they label him as a sociopath because then it assures us that a normal person can't behave that way, and that it's fairly rare.
