Large urban dailies often have limited space for crime stories outside their geographic area.  There was an appalling clickbait-y murder in Spokane.  WaPo and NYT didn't cover that, either.   Every day, hundreds of interesting stories go out to papers via the AP system, and they don't all appear in every major news outlet.  An anecdote is not evidence of some campaign to avoid a topic.
