If electric cars are the future then the market will render that decision.
Markets can't make decisions on matters of public interest, like saving the planet. That requires governments to craft policies and laws that are in that public interest, based on a pool of expertise that is independent of corporate influence. We don't have catalytic converters because corporations woke up one day and said, hey let's reduce tailpipe emissions AND horsepower, man that will really draw the customers! People weren't walking into their Chevy dealer and asking, hey do you all have something that reduces CO, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons in my exhaust gas while cutting horsepower? Libertarians and the Invisible Hand didn't reduce smog in thousands of cities. That was our government, pooling the expertise of thousands of chemists, engineers and atmospheric scientists, and crafting a policy in the interest of ordinary citizens trying to breathe.
