I wonder if the owners have business interuption insurance to cover losses in the event... and what the deductible might be.

They do not

Do you have a source, because doing a real quick google search turned up nada, except one longish artice which brings up the subject which suggests it could be contested by insurers and the insured whether Covid-19 qualifies as a triggering event.

https://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/sports-organizations-consider-these-20045

In the United States, the New York Department of Financial Services issued a letter calling for insurers to explain “whether contamination related to a pandemic may constitute ‘physical damage or loss’” and to “describe what type of damage or loss is sufficient for coverage under the policy.” Several US state commissioners for insurance have made statements encouraging insurer flexibility.

Sorry - only source is my memory

It was being discussed when the issue was money and the Olympic Games - at which time they said IOC organizers were smart enough to have pandemic protection where major sports leagues did not.

NP-can't find anything definitive but it seems claims would be contested by insurers (big surprise) even if BI insurance was in place by teams.

Whether MLB opens the 2020 season or not, they will likely be able to use changes in the tax law due to CARE Act to use NOLs to carryback 5-years and offset taxes in prior years.

As an aside, and with the proviso I'm not a tax guy or accountant, but its possible that a lot of '20 expenses may be non-cash (depreciation, amortization, write-downs) and a postive cash-flow could be generated in that $100 in NOLs could generate up to $35 in federal tax refunds. So its conceivable not playing baseball could be a net cash-flow positive event.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and union executive Tony Clark have also been at odds over plans to restart the season. Manfred has been locked in on a 60-game regular season over fears that a second wave would impact the back end of the already shortened season. Clark is asking for 10 games more.

I told him 70 games was simply impossible given the calendar and the public health situation, and he went ahead and made that proposal anyway,” Manfred said Thursday.

Clark needs to go

Its called negotiating.

I haven't followed this closely, but Clark got you 10 more games than MLB originally wanted to play at full pro-rate pay.

IMO the owners concern about health seems contrary to their wishes about exposing more teams to a possible 2nd CV wave.

Its the heftier post-season dough that has traditionally been off limits to players.

owners want that payout for themselves.

Owners make more money at 60, given other provisions - than they would have at 50.

But sure - call it a win for Clark

Seems he may not take it.

Seems like if he doesn't, Manfred will order it regardless.

The yeah vote - a form of grudging agreement, not to be confused with a "yea" vote.

Why does somebody who professes to not caring if there's baseball this season take the time to cyber trash-talk?
