I think you are supposed to get in a rundown, to give the runner on 2nd a chance to advance.

I also think a contact play, for the runner on 2nd, does not involve a ball hit in front of him.

If the trail runner just goes to third immediately he is ON THIRD when the play is finished.

If anything he gets the batter to second, true - by running down - if the batter is aware/made aware.

Riley KNOWS CONTACT is ON.  Thus should just go immediately - if Turner decides to go after Riley - which he wouldn't unless he took the bait - great - tie game.

Riley standing on third and watching the rundown of Swanson is what you want there - trust me.

And by the way - asspoor at bat by whoever the hitter was.

Now...

Dangerously - if Swanson then somehow gets back to third - now TWO MEN occupying same base - and nobody is tagged, Riley could then vacate and go back toward second.  This would be quite uncommon - dropped ball situation being one type play I could think of (Swanson is tagged but player drops ball and he reaches third with ball on ground).

This should help kid as he replays the Braves shitshow and tries to figure out who's on 3rd

Costello: All I'm trying to find out is what's the guy's name on first base.

Abbott: No. What is on second base.

Costello: I'm not asking you who's on second.

Abbott: Who's on first.

Costello: One base at a time!

Abbott: Well, don't change the players around.

Costello: I'm not changing nobody!

Abbott: Take it easy, buddy.

Costello: I'm only asking you, who's the guy on first base?

Abbott: That's right.

Costello: Ok.

Abbott: All right.

PAUSE

Costello: What's the guy's name on first base?

Abbott: No. What is on second.

Costello: I'm not asking you who's on second.

Abbott: Who's on first.

Costello: I don't know.

Abbott: He's on third, we're not talking about him.

Costello: Now how did I get on third base?

Abbott: Why you mentioned his name.

Costello: If I mentioned the third baseman's name, who did I say is playing third?

Abbott: No. Who's playing first.

112 pitches seemed like a lot for Glasnow (or anybody) for less than 5 innings. I suspect he should have been out earlier.

Not a good night for the Rays, though fortunately for them no matter how much they lose by, the next game starts 0-0.

Kershaw was more than sufficiently Kershaw. The Rays had best beat up on the other pitchers, though Buehler has looked tough.

6. 2. 1. 8. 78

Line for Kershaw

Very nice

Pairing high k with low pitch count is ACE territory alone.

Mr Roberts can at some point explain to Big Papi and the masses why he didn't use Buehler on customary 4 days rest

Papi sort of tore his ex teammate a new one on Fox postgame last night.

(For the record, Frank Thomas and A Rod defended the LA manager).

In fairness, he kept calling his name but Buehler never answered.
