Hank Aaron RIP

Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron, who broke Babe Ruth’s home run record in 1974, has passed away at 86, according to multiple reports.

a sad day as age claims another all-time great.

RIP.  He braved a lot of death threats as he approached Ruth's HR record.    Still leads in RBIs and total bases.

As a child, I got to see Aaron play in 1965, during that period (1955-1965) when it was possible to watch the Milwaukee Braves play the KC Athletics.  I don't remember much of the game, except that Aaron homered and KC lost, and the hot dog was excellent.  Milwaukee, after that year, was teamless for four seasons.  Perhaps that traumatic period was why the new team was named in honor of beer.

If you took away Henry's homers, he still had over 3000 hits. He got MVP votes for 19 seasons. Who does that?

And a class act, all the way. So glad I got to see him and so many other great NATIONAL LEAGUERS play for so many years.

So would you call all Yankee fans racist due to the few's treatment of Aaron?

Better put it in your will.

I have heard the card market is back, with investments coming in from athlete's themselves

Of course it had been ruined by the designed short runs and resulting over inflated pricing.

Only card I really invested in was the the Ozzie Smith Topps rookie which I paid 13 bucks for.  This was before I knew anything about grading

Funny, in Gregg Jeffries rookie year there was a full page ad in Newsday offering 100 card lots of his card - for the bargain price of 850 bucks.

That lot of course worth probable between 10 and 20.

Sad to have to admit a friend and I almost went for the 425 a piece.

But yes, rest in piece, Henry.  In my first days as a fan, you - along with Mays, Clemente, Gibson, Robby - were the game to me.  This long before any thoughts of you and Mr. Ruth.

Two Hall of Famers and a Dick
His career was a few years longer but Dick Allen is sort of similar to Albert Belle - a great player who had... issues that adversely effected how their careers are perceived. Belle's career was too short for serious HoF consideration, but I suspect he would have had the same issue with the BBWA.

And if Dick Allen were white he would have been a "fiery competitor" and in the Hall of Fame. Discuss.
