Wow.  Harold Baines and Lee Smith made the Hall of Fame.

I can honestly say that not once did I ever watch Harold Baines play and think, "there goes a hall of famer".

I don't think he should make the Hall of Great

maybe the Hall of Good.

harumph!

His selection strengthens Dwight Evans candidacy if you care.

I thought Evans was Hall of Very Good worthy.

Baines may be your new Rabbit Maranville

Rabbit Maranville will always be my Rabbit Maranville unless and until somebody like Bucky Dent goes in.

Not sure why Baines over Will Clark or Joe Carter, let alone Evans or Albert Belle. Well, ok, Baines was never a solid gold ill-hearted full bore asshole, but still.

I'm actually not a huge fan of Lee Smith being in the Hall of Fame, either, but I suppose I can be convinced about him.

I wouldn't have voted for Smith, but at least a case can be made for the guy.

I don't see the case for Baines.

Just took a look, and he only got 6% of the vote when he was eligible.

If they're going to let the Vets committee let their buddies in, they should put in some qualifiers, like receiving a minimum of 65% of BBWAA HoF votes.

His election is a sham.

And he will by default become the new Rabbit!

% when eligible isnt pertinent.

These committees were formed for that reason - to find overlooed guys

I know there are many anti-Biggio guys, so this wont hold water with them - but my thought on Baines when he played was to watch that countdown to 3000

And I find 134 hits negligible.  Great hitter for a long time.  Was actually better statistically after age 30.

Maybe hold on to "THESE NEW COMMITTEES ARE SILLY" - that would speak to the issue.

Anti-Baines guys have plenty to go on

100 runs - never
40 2B - never
30 HR - never
75 BB - never
Black ink - (led league)    ONE (SLG)

If Baines is in because of his bat alone (while he was a decent OF he essentially didn't wear a glove the last 10 years of his career) then Edgar seems the easiest of slam dunks.

It seems that Baines, oddly, benefitted from falling out of the regular selection process so soon.

Was Edgar on the list of players/managers/execs for this particular committee to vote YES on?

Not sure he was.  BELLE was - might better use him for your point.

These new committees will certainly slant toward the Hall becoming more inclusive.

Like I said - hate the fact the committees even exist, if you so choose.

% vote is certainly pertinent as its an accurate yardstick of how he was measured when he was eligible to be voted for the Hall.

And he wasn't overlooked, but only 1 of 16 voters (at most) thought his 20+ year career was worthy of Hof enshrinement.

If he got 66% rather than 6% you might take it to the next level, but he was rejected by the generally accepted protocol, and 94% of the voters.

This seeming act of cronyism cheapens the HoF.

I read elsewhere that Harold had a lot of support on the "Era Committee" from a past owner, gm who traded for him, managers, and some ex-teamates who all thought he was a great guy.
