No he shouldn't have been the first... but if poor decisions were made in the past it's no excuse to carry on the tradition.

He often (especially in the most pressure-filled games) was asked to go more than 1 inning.

He was a 2 inning guy when he first burst onto the national scene, setting up rather than closing.

Part - time player is a little bit of an anachronism.  These days your starting pitcher might only go 5-6 innings every 5 days and thats considered ok.

Edgar, Halladay, Mussina, and Mo in the HoF

and Mo gets 100%.

Could have sworn somebody - oh, right, the Worcester writer - said he wouldn't be voting for Rivera!
He said he wasn't going to cast a ballot at all which perserved the 100%.

90%+ of Mo's HoF work was done within a 1-inning appearance.

Can't speak for boz, but I used the part-time description as a TIC phrase to mock the foolishness some use to diminish the role/importance of relievers who may only pitch 1 inning or a DH who's only glove is a batting glove.

and a 5 inning start might be ok in the post-season/WS, but a 5-inning regular season guy is a bullpen killer, and not highly prized in the regular season.

If you throw "only one pitch and one inning" for decades, and no one can hit that pitch, you're 100 per cent a HOFer.

Halladay should go in as a Blue Jay. Who will speak for him?

Mussina was overdue, and helps Jamie Moyer's case.

Martinez was put in to make it easier for steroid user Ortiz to get in.

Crime Dog got screwed.

Pete Rose still screwed---MLB supports and earns money from sanctioning gambling, but Rose isnt "moral" enough to enter Cooperstown. Joke!

And writers shouldn't be given a vote, because they get paid to report the news, not create the news.

That is all.

Back to Harper, Machado, Keuchel...

"A part time player. 100"?"

- Idiots everywhere.

Clemens and Bonds inched up, Mr. Catsup soaked sock took a 9 + point leap.

Omar up 5%. ManRam holds steady.

Many of these guys will get in via the new improved vets committee

Smoltz today said that McGriff, who struggled in writer balloting, would surely enter via that avenue

I certainly see if for Schilland likely Manny as well.

"Missing helps Jamie Moyet's case"

No.

One was consistently excellent

The other simply not.

Moyer: 25 years in the majors. Just four other pitchers played that long.

 269-209 record and a 4.25 ERA, ranks 16th all-time in games started (638) and 35th in victories.

Only 34 wins came before age 30. Let that sink in. 235 wins after turning 30. That is artistry.

For age 30 and older pitchers the numbers are:

WINS
1 Cy Young 316
2 Phil Niekro 287
3 Warren Spahn 277
4 Gaylord Perry 238
5. Jamie Moyer 235
6 Randy Johnson 227
7 Early Wynn 217
T8 Grover C Alexander 213
T8 Lefty Grove 213
10 Greg Maddux 205

Had he played more for the Red Sox, you'd be claiming it was steroids, not artistry!

You are too funny.

He does still lead the majors in one career category: most home runs given up.

I'm not sure the HR thing is a great argument AGAINST Moyer when you note who comes right after him.

It is not an argument against him or for him, just a note that it is the only thing he led in for his career.

Mussina is not an argument for Moyer, that's all.
