Today the Red Sox ended a streak  in which they gave up  6 or more runs in 8 consecutive games. (And a period in which they surrendered 5 or more runs n 12 of 13, but that's not a streak and who's to say if that's over!)

They've also scored 5 or more in 12 of 14 and 16 of . It was 17 games ago that the Sox last played a game in which both teams scored under 6 runs.

In the last two months, 11 times have both teams scored below 5 runs, with five of those against the Astros.

By Hamiltonian standards, the NL Central is the "best" division in MLB at the moment, because from worst to first is 4.5 games, a smaller gap than any other division has between 1st and 2nd place.

That their first place club would be no better than 3rd place in any other division except the NL West, where they'd be 12 games back, is beside the point to him.

If you told me in March we would be 5.5 back of the Twins going into the break I would have been in despair. As it is, despite nearly everything going wrong that could go wrong, I'm hopeful.

Carlos Carasco has been diagnosed with a form of leukemia but still expects to pitch this year.
