If by "taking security seriously" do you mean things like "physical barriers preventing people from just walking into medical centres and killing/severely wounding innocent people"? Because you conceded that Astralia doesn't have such things and yet mass shootings don't happen. Perhaps there's another element involved in mass shootings here. An element you continually refuse to acknowledge because of your ridiculous desire to see everyone armed lest they encounter bad purple lurking in the shadows or making sure that yards are kept free from stray soccer balls. Don't you think that doing more about the proliferation of weapons should constitute an element of "taking security seriously"?
Guns in America are going nowhere, maybe assault rifles...the Second Amendment isn't going anywhere either.
Maybe stricter licencing, purchasing, and registration of gun owners and the guns might help, but probably not a lot.
Good Americans, male and female, do need guns to protect themselves from the "bad people."

51 yr old Robert Rheams allegedly forced his way into a woman's home in Hammond around 5am.
Rheams was on parole at the time of the home invasion after spending about 20 years in prison for armed robbery, according the the sheriff's office.
Rheams also allegedly committed a car-jacking hours before the home invasion.
