I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs.
There was music in the cafe's at night
And revolution in the air.
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died.
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside
And when finally the bottom fell out,
I became withdrawn.
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keeping on like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue.

Now I'm going back again
I got to get to her somehow.
All the people we used to know
Are an illusion to me now
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter's wives
Don't know how it all got.started
I don't know what they do with their lives
Me, I'm still on the road
Heading for another joint
We always did feel the same
We just saw it from a different point of view.
Tangled up in blue.

Greatest song of the rock era.

Great song, but still second to Chuck Berry's My DingaLing.

Seem like total silence was the only friend I had
Bowl of oatmeal tried to stare me down, and won
And it was twelve o'clock before I realized
I was having' no fun..."

"And knowing ahead, there comes a fork in the road.
Pants have gotta go.
We're on an island on the Fourth of July
Looks like the tide is going home.
In time I'd find
A little way to your heart.
Down to the general store for nothing specific
Gonna wash my bones in the Atlantic shore...."

I'm old enough to sin but I'm too young to vote
Society been dragging on the tail of my coat
But I've got a suitcase full of fifty pound notes
And a half naked woman with her tongue down my throat
And I feeeeeeel so good...

I saw Richard Thompson open for REM in October 1986.   Great show!!  After the show we got to the Knotty Pine Tavern in Cleveland Heights just in time to see the Red Sox win Game 5 of the World Series.  Though the Series was headed back to Shea I didn't think the Mets could win two in a row.

Everyday I get up and pray to Jah
And he increases the number of clocks
By exactly one
Everybody's coming home for lunch these days
Last night there were skinheads on my lawn.

I remember the ska influence.  The Rasta Jah, a piece of god in everyone.  When we lived in Oregon there were some kids up the street with a garage band called Minivan Beethoven, which  l guess was a nod to CVB.  They traveled around, fittingly, in a beat up Ford Aerostar.

Were they in some 80s screwball comedy?  I want to call it Wild something, can't quite recall the exact title.
