Its not inane at all. It would be rational for Iran to avoid the negative consequences taken by another's pre-emptive initiative. A pre-emptive move to negate another's pre-emptive move would be logical, depending on the risk/reward parameters.

Its chess, except the pawns have mothers, fathers, wives or husbands and children. And they all bleed.

In fact, taking it a step further, its logical to assume the Trump admin knew that in taking what they characterize as a preemptive strike against an imminent threat, that the assaasination woulId be answered by Iran with a deadly response.

And that it was possible that response to the assassination, would be far more dangerous long-term than the original threat.

By unknown and horrendous magnitudes.

While the threat may have been real, it is not out of the question, that Trump was upset that Melania wouldn't put out New year's Eve, or maybe that be had tripled bogeyed the the 18th hole at Mar-A-Lago, lost a $100 side-bet and acted out, and wanted to re-establish his alphaness.

Who the fuck knows with this inept dangerous wannabe dictator.

He wants war.   It's 2020.  He doesn't care who bleeds,  as long as he can deploy weapons of mass distraction.

Wall Street poops itself whenever oil prices change a couple points.  Yet,  somehow, to certain minds it's unpatriotic to talk about alternative energy sources that would give independence from the vagaries of the global market.

Meanwhile Northrop Grumman and Raytheon stock got a major bump!

The Vice President of the United States of America deliberately lied to We the People.

It's been a long time since I read Thomas Friedman mostly because he is completely lame and otherwise due to firewall issues.  But his column on Suleimani's death is amnesiac and misguided and pathetic.

Quote
we must never forget that it is the dysfunction of many of the Sunni Arab regimes — their lack of freedom, modern education and women’s empowerment — that made them so weak that Iran was able to take them over from the inside with its proxies.

Except that isn't at all what happened.  Hezbollah got a toehold and developed in Lebanon in the wake of the Israeli invasion, as they were the only real organized resistance to the nearly two decade occupation of half the country, and a large part of the reason for the Israeli withdrawal.

Similarly Iraq fell into Iranian influence not because of a lack of freedom or women's education, but because of the US invasion and occupation.  In fact the very chaotic freedom we gave them meant the Shiite majority took over and naturally aligned with Iran.

Iran doesn't control Yemen like Friedman and others in the US seem to believe.

I guess you can try to make a case that the Arab Spring was the result of such forces and Syria a belated entrant.  But of course, propping up the Syrian Gov't isn't much different to how the US supports the Saudis and others.  But as Iraq shows, more freedom rapidly introduced is more a plan for chaos and score settling than any kind of progress.

Friedman's game has always been that everyone should be like us and then they'd be prosperous and modern and happy.  Ignoring that many don't want to be like us, wouldn't likely reach economic success even if they were, and ignoring the very real dysfunctions of US style freedom and modernity.

Women's rights is a laudable goal imo, but a major cause of the Arab uprisings is that half the populations are under 30, and even under 25 in some cases, and there isn't close to enough economic development and jobs to absorb them.  How adding large numbers of females to the job pool would help is beyond me.

Anyway, if you read the full column the US is barely mentioned, as though it's played next to no role int he ME this century, while Suleimani has been responsible for everything.  It's silly ahistorical stuff.  Besides I think Trump was likely to side with Bibi and punish the Iranians no matter what Suleimani or Iranian proxy forces did.

Taking Suleimani out was an interesting gamble.  Nobody really knows what comes next.  But the fact that Iran does have many proxy forces means they can try to hide any role in whatever retaliation goes down.  It's still unclear who took half the Saudi's oilfields off line with drone attacks.  But there's little doubt some escalation is coming.

I said much earlier that Trump might go for some Iranian bombings to up his approval and win re-election.  Sure seems like that's part of the trajectory we're on.

Yes.   Mine came all the way off and will need surgical reattachment.  And note the clever conflating of alternative energy with alternative fuels.   Petroleum companies still do not speak the language of an electron economy.  And why would they?  They are invested in massive infrastructure for transporting goo and refining it.   That's all scrap metal when vehicles are fueled from a plug.

Right now would be a perfect time for a Revolution in Iran, it is the perfect time for new leaders there. And they need more freedom, and improved human rights, including improved human rights for women.

I would also suggest pot, Rock and Roll music, and a sexual revolution, and a Great Enlightenment, and a Renaissance.

It is about to get really bad in Iran, and something good might as well come out of it, so people need to have a plan, and they need to know what they want.

And Ivanka Trump can work together with Mahlagha Jaberi to help to create jobs for the women of Iran, as things improve in Iran.

A new and improved Iran can happen. The young people need to rise up and work for a new Iran with improved human rights.

Queen Farah Pahlavi can help too.

People need to have a plan for the outcome that they want to see happen, it is all already in momentum.

Salute,

Tony V.

Tony, you are our leading anachronistic poet. I salute you.

LOL

He cuts a pathetic figure. A leader must speak honestly to his people in a crisis. The sly tactics of climate change denial, the false consoling words that it’s a scare and we can carry on as before, have left Morrison’s words as meaningless as a hum in the background. Nothing he says is worth hearing.

#####

He's not perfect, and is growing into the top job. [only been 'king' for 7 months].
These fires are unprecedented.
"She'll be right, mate" is no longer good enough.

What about actions;

SCO-MO DECLARES WAR! on the fires, and therefore on the Devil who is clearly running them.

He's moving his family to the national's capital Canberra, to live in The Lodge [White House] so that he can personally conduct the war.
The army has been mobilised, 3000 reservists called up.
The navy mobilised, more ships.
The air force mobilised, more planes. C-130 etc transports.
More water bombing aircraft to go into action...we should be buying a fleet of 747-400 water bombing planes from America.
He's taken control out of the hands of the states, who said they wanted to run the fight.

The Left should be praising Sco-Mo for resisting the political temptation to give those who elected him 'king' what they want.

Sco-Mo supporters are crying out:

. "Build more dams everywhere, we want water."
. "Build more coal-fired power stations, we want guaranteed electricity to keep the lights, aircon, heating, phone chargers, stoves, microwaves, computers, industrial machinery etc ON".
. "Ditch the Paris agreement"
. "Stop immigration".
etc.

Not criticising him.
The more they bash him the more those who elected him 'king' bash back.

He should lose some weight, ditch the 'daggy dad' image, get himself a fancy "Commander in Chief" uniform, adopt a George W tough guy swagger, stop saying anything to the media, stop giving interviews, only speak via press releases that have been run past his lawyers and 'back room boys'.
Become 'Presidential', send deputies out to interview the public, fire victims, town mayors about needs etc. Then act on their reports.
Trusted, intelligent, Conservative, deputies, not just any old hacks.
