Rep. Lou Correa

Since the initial outbreak of coronavirus, health experts have warned about the likelihood of it spreading to the United States. Unfortunately, the President never hired a White House pandemic expert, and his budgets have made significant cuts to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health.

Preparing for a potential health emergency cannot be done overnight. We must start preparing—that means hiring experts and fully funding our health agencies. Congress is preparing to vote on emergency funding. The President must join us and act before it's too late.

---------------

We need to act on this thing quickly, and we need to pump the money into research so that we can develop a vaccine.

Orange County has declared a state of emergency on this issue, so that the county can act quickly and nimbly in response to whatever happens.

And the disease is in Italy, in Tuscany and in Sicily, it is crazy, we need to find a vaccine quickly.

For those of you who have done research, can they use the blood from a survivor to help to find a vaccine?

How are vaccines made? (I know, I can google it, but it would be interesting to get input from someone who has done research and who has actually worked to make vaccines, if anyone here has done that.)

I am glad that Orange County is taking this thing seriously, and I hope that a vaccine can be found quickly.

Salute,

Tony V.

So what?  Americans have no inclination to turn their Health Care over to the Government.

It's all in the phrasing, isn't it?  If you adopt sophistry and call ANY government involvement a "turning over," then you've just clouded the issue.

No. You have. The only category in the poll that queried opinions on complete government control garnered just 13 per cent approval.

You just did it again.   It's you who is making the Strawman that any government involvement is "complete. "  Sophistry.   I wasn't suggesting complete control,  nor did the rest of my post (to which you failed to reply) fail to make that clear.   A majority favor PARTIAL management of the total healthcare system by government and you have no cogent reasoning (that you've bothered to express)  against that middle path.    Hence,  trolling.
Feel better preaching to the choir?
My original response to you on the 24th read(and continues to read )

Americans have no inclination to turn their Health Care over to the Government.
Especially those who rely on employers or Seniors opting for Medicare Advantage plans. They never have and the failures of ObamaCare ( i.e.you can keep your doctor) solidified that opposition.

The polls I posted showed that barely over 10 per cent favored a government takeover of our health insurance. Only Josh turned the numbers around and maintained just the opposite.

Our federal government has instituted a national pooling of resources (the basic definition of socialism) for various public benefits for over a century, a concept going back to Hamiltonian philosophy and guys like Thaddeus Stevens in the Civil War era.   Land grant colleges,  national railway network,  interstates,  aviation safety,  science research,  bank deposit security, retirement income,  crop insurance,  soil conservation,  home heating funds and food for those in poverty,  worker safety,  etc.   The value of such socialized systems is long established,  long past any serious debate,  and it's now about choosing a level and degree of management rather than giving up and going back to Jefferson's "yeoman farmer. "
None of those have any connection to Socialism.

Now markets are crashing, supply of goods from China has slowed or stopped.
Yes, the West's folly in exporting 'all' its manufacturing etc jobs to China etc.

Australia has arguably the highest electricity prices in the world.
Why?
"Coal is evil, renewables now"...climate change drivel.
Businesses are closing, can't afford the electricity.
More jobs for China as off overseas the businesses go.
Rio Tinto the latest one.

Which is backed by the numbers.

In a Hill-HarrisX survey, 13 percent of respondents said they would prefer a health care system that covers all citizens and doesn't allow for private plans, an approach that is sometimes referred to as "single-payer."

The most popular option, at 32 percent, consisted of a universal, government-operated system that also would allow people to buy private, supplemental insurance.

Twenty-six percent of respondents said they wanted a government insurance plan offered to all citizens, but one that doesn't compel people with private plans to use it,[/b]a system sometimes called a "public option."

A small minority of 15 percent of voters said they wanted the government to completely remove itself from paying for health care, while another 14 percent said they want to Leave things as is.
Just 13 per cent want the government to take over health care.

Love your careful editing for emphasis.

It's insurance, as has been pointed out, that is being "taken over" and what all but 15% have said is that they want the government to provide health insurance that would be available to all citizens.

@realDonaldTrump
I will be having a News Conference at the White House, on this subject, today at 6:00 P.M. CDC representatives, and others, will be there. Thank you!

Tonight:
Quote
Asked if he was worried about the spread of novel coronavirus in the United States, President Trump said, “No, because we’re ready for it."

“It is what it is. We’re ready for it. We’re really prepared," the President continued. "We have, as I said, we have the greatest people in the world. We’re very ready for it. We hope it doesn’t spread. There’s a chance that it won’t spread, too. And there’s a chance that it will. It’s just a question of at what level. So far, we’ve done a great job. When you have 15 people — with this whole world coming into the United States — and the 15 people are either better or close to being better, that’s pretty good.”

"There are now 60 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in the United States, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The current total breaks down to 42 passengers who were aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, three people repatriated from China and 15 US cases."

They did not get into details, they just said that they needed to declare a state of emergency so that they can act quickly and nimbly with whatever happens.

They just said that they want to be prepared.

I have questions too, such as does this mean that they can quarantine people involuntarily? And question everyone they know and everyone they come into contact with? Do people lose all sense of privacy? Can this power be misused, such as was the mental hospitals of the past? Such as in a "Streetcar Named Desire."

I think they want unlimited power in the face of mass deaths, but there must be checks and balances.

I would be interested to see a list of the powers they want in the face of an emergency.

Salute,

Yes, they can quarantine people involuntarily - otherwise, a quarantine is not much good!

And I sure hope they can question people, as you describe.

Sure, the power could be misused, and far worse than in Streetcar! Like, say, the Border Patrol and Homeland Security have been misusing their power.

But despite my misgivings about the Trump administration, I believe those powers are required for this kind of issue if we are to have a ghost of a chance of stopping this before it goes through and kills 10 times the number that we lose in the flu.
