George Zimmerman 2.0
2nd mention of Zimmerman here in the last two days.
Last night I watched 2/3rds of the film Richard Jewell. And I thought how much Jewell was a Zimmerman type. Basically a loser who wanted to be law enforcement and fit in, and overzealously harasses people once he gets a minimum of power.
And then things weirdly diverge. Jewell actually does something good. With his heightened sense of threat and self-importance he finds a terrorist bomb and helps disperse people saving lives, but then gets vilified as the perp. While Zimmerman with his heightened sense of threat and self-importance starts a confrontation, kills a young man and gets praised by half the population and only vilified by the other half.
I hadn't made the connection before, but once the movie got rolling, Zimmerman was an obvious latter-day reference point/successor.
