And, honestly, they didn't even need to have given him the field sobriety test - they could have sent him home or driven him home then. They chose not to.

As a favor?  Is this suggested by police training in most locales?

I think there is good reason drunk drivers are arrested.

And that this was an obviously drunk driver.

Especially in times of heightened tension and trouble. Save the jail space.

I got pulled over for failure to stop for a ped in a crosswalk. (Turned out the ped wasn't trying to cross, but so what, right?)

My registration was expired.

Instead of taking me and my car away, the police let me move my car off street to leave it there and to have a friend come give me a ride.

Nor is my story unique. This is how police do things in many places.

"Drink Driving Is A Crime" in bambuland...there are signs up everywhere.

Fail the roadside test...you just don't get to go home.
You get a trip to the police station in the patrol car.
If you look a bit mean, you get to ride in the patrol car cuffed.
Then you get to blow into a proper machine...fail that test, depending on the reading different things will happen to you...none of them ideal for you....with most involving walking or catching the bus for months.

Wow.

I look forward to our learning more about her.

The only one with her name on FB is somebody I am 3 degrees of separation from by multiple pathways.

No idea if it is the same one, as that one is not from Washington or the west coast.

Will the Supreme Court grant trump work release to attend the republican national convention?

http://www.theweek.com/speedreads/919996/families-black-men-found-hanging-from-trees-california-ask-deeper-investigations-into-deaths

The quick conclusion that it was a suicide bothered me.

I'm not surprised at the request for a deeper investigation or, unfortunately, at the need to make the request to have a chance of getting one.

Tattoos are a boon to the police.  Tagging yourself with readily identifiable personalized markings.

Black guy torches 5 police cars would probably get the max 10 years.  We'll see what a white chick gets.  I'd guess 2-4.

So it's sad because it's a white woman committing crimes?  She's presumed to have a future and good life ahead of her.  But if it were a black male, he'd just be written off as no good.

The whole racist animus behind that sentiment is what's sad.

Nah, he's sad for the poor innocent cars, parked in the wrong place at the wrong time. Things are more important than people.
