So, Judge Salas, whose son was murdered and husband shot over the weekend, is the Judge in the Deutsche Bank case. Deutsche Bank AG allegedly misled investors about anti-money-laundering deficiencies and didn’t “properly monitor” customers it considered “high risk,” such as Jeffrey Epstein, investors said in New Jersey federal district court.

The bank didn’t tell investors it hadn’t fixed disclosure control problems and wasn’t keeping an appropriate eye on clients like convicted sex offender Epstein* and two other banks involved in past financial misconduct scandals, investors alleged Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.. ---Bloomberg News

Salas was the judge in a 2015 lawsuit he filed in federal court claiming the Selective Service System, which requires men to register for military draft, “discriminates against both sexes in violation of Equal Protection as incorporated into the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.”

A then-20-year-old Morris County woman wanted to register, but was denied because of her gender, according to published reports at the time. Salas ruled the suit could move forward, though Den Hollander since left the case. CNN reported he told another lawyer he left the case because he was terminally ill.

Den Hollander wrote in an online essay in 2019 about having cancer and about a planned hearing apparently before Salas, the first Hispanic woman to be appointed to the U.S. District Court in New Jersey.


“All of this was a nice stressful addition since it occurred in the middle of preparing for oral argument in a federal case before a lazy and incompetent Latina judge appointed by Obama,” he wrote.

In another online screed, Den Hollander wrote he researched Salas’ background and made racist comments about Hispanic judges. The document was posted on a website with its domain name registered to Den Hollander.

He decried Salas’ earlier legal career, describing her as working for “an ambulance chasing firm” and representing “ne’er-do-wells” as a federal public defender. Den Hollander also criticized Salas for joining “politically correct organizations trying to convince America that whites, especially white males, were barbarians, and all those of a darker skin complexion were victims.”

The document also disparaged Hispanic women on the bench as “usually a problem—driven by an inferiority complex.”

Den Hollander graduated from Columbia University Business School with an MBA in 1997, according to a school spokesman, and George Washington University Law School in 1985, a representative for that school confirmed.

His resume, posted online on his website, says he worked at the U.S. Department of the Treasury in the mid 1980s, after spending two years as a producer and editor at WABC TV News in New York City.

The suspect gunman worked for a law firm, and also a solo attorney, his resume says, including in the 1990s as an attorney, for “companies, individuals, and nonprofit organizations in America, Russia, and Ecuador,” he wrote.

Den Hollander attracted brushes of notoriety over the years as a men’s rights advocate, who raged against feminism. Among suits he filed was a case alleging night clubs in New York City discriminate against men by offering “ladies nights” discounts.

“Now is the time for all good men to fight for their rights before they have no rights left,” a passage on his website read. His site also refers to a “Lady Judge” who decided one of his cases.

He also spent time in Russia and, according to his online resume, worked in Moscow for security and investigations firm Kroll between 1999 and 2000. And now this: The now-deceased lawyer suspected of fatally shooting the son and seriously wounding the husband of U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas in New Jersey on Sunday may have been targeting at least one other judge in New York.


Roy Den Hollander had a photo of that state’s Chief Judge Janet DiFiore in his car, her spokesman told NJ Advance Media on Tuesday.

“That’s what I understand to be true. At this point, that’s all I have,” said Lucian Chalfen, director of communications for New York State Courts. The information, which was relayed to Chalfen from the FBI, was first reported in the New York Times.

New York's Chief Judge Janet DiFiore, who announced the development in her latest weekly address amid the COVID-19 pandemic, said the return of grand juries was a “significant milestone not only for our court system but for the entire criminal justice system.”

I'm not sure of that. I think, and the lawyers among us would know, that you can be charged with a crime if you knowingly encourage others to act criminally. So, there's that.

I imagine they would steamroll over him or remove him, if he were the only obstacle.

I can picture the Senate, convened during Christmas Day in an effort to replace whomever.

Nice of McConnell and a few others to give this kind of ammo to their opponents prior to the election, but they might be willing to trade their seats for what they would think is a long term super majority on the Court.
