Joe & Barry.

It’s good to be reminded of what national leadership looks like in the current climate.

HitlerNazis wanted National Socialism.
Those taking over the streets, cities seem to want the same thing...Marxism/Communism/National Socialism.
Trump-ilk seem to be the only ones willing to fight for freedom in America today.

For the record,  not that there is one,  I'm pretty far to the Left.   IOW,  I reside where there's a lot of creative ferment on how to have "economics as if people mattered. "

My stance is unabashedly extreme:  I think life predicated on the notion of "I want to buy lots of cool shit" is a shallow one.   If you are wedded to someone whose life is dedicated to material wealth,  and/or being "better" than others,  dump them and go find a real person.  JMO.

I think folks have to realize that there is a relentless consumer culture churning away trying to make you part with your money for things you don't need.  I prefer to spend my money on things that will genuinely make me happy and enrich my life -- mostly international travel, also basketball (fun and fitness), books, etc.

Reducing your wants to things that matter to you also frees you up to work as much or as little as you want.  And I think it's good to weigh trade-offs.  Do I want to give $3 to Starbucks or to that guy living on the street?  I believe how and where you spend your money can change the structure of the world, especially if people join together.  If everybody gave $3 to my local homeless lady instead of to Starbucks, why she'd be a billionaire and calling the shots.

Twitter is not on the masthead of The New York Times. But Twitter has become its ultimate editor. As the ethics and mores of that platform have become those of the paper, the paper itself has increasingly become a kind of performance space. Stories are chosen and told in a way to satisfy the narrowest of audiences, rather than to allow a curious public to read about the world and then draw their own conclusions. I was always taught that journalists were charged with writing the first rough draft of history. Now, history itself is one more ephemeral thing molded to fit the needs of a predetermined narrative.

Somehow REDSTATEWARD neglected to post this news item.    Its OK, I missed it at first too:

Hundreds of journalists from the Wall Street Journal signed a letter this week criticizing the paper’s opinion section for spreading misinformation.

The stunning rebuke, signed by 280 staffers of the Journal and sent to the paper’s new publisher, calls for better fact-checking, more transparency, and a clearer divide between news and opinion divisions, according to a draft of the letter obtained by Mediaite.

“Opinion’s lack of fact-checking and transparency, and its apparent disregard for evidence, undermine our readers’ trust and our ability to gain credibility with sources,” the letter to publisher Almar Latour says. “Many readers already cannot tell the difference between reporting and Opinion. And from those who know of the divide, reporters nonetheless face questions about the Journal’s accuracy and fairness because of errors published in opinion.

Let loose on the streets, folks in Portland want extreme (unproportional) mayhem.

What "mayhem" is not proportional to the cops killing a man, kiidcarter8?

Again, point to actions by Portland protesters you think is so out of line.

DHS was given a chance, and all they could come up with was graffiti and broken fences.
That Ted Wheeler Episode last night  was a hoot...booed by the rioters then tear gassed by the police.

The Mayor of the whitest  city in the nation trying to lead  a riot over nothing reduced to tears of rejection by the mob and his own police department’s reaction to the lawlessness.
Priceless.

So you too can't point to actions taken by the protesters that justifies their being beaten and tear gassed.

Wheeler was giving an interview when he was gassed.  He was gassed by Federal Forces while not on Federal Courthouse property.  There is video.  He was not "trying to lead a riot" which would be an absurd contention on its face, even if there wasn't video evidence.

But good to know the Forum's "Free Speech Defender!" finds it a HOOT! when the First Amendment rights of Americans are infringed upon.  Huh, maybe its the message he is concerned with, not the Constitution?  Never would have thought it true.

A Judge finds it necessary to order the Federal Forces in Portland not to target journalists and other observers with violence.

I'm sure our Forum's Free Speech Defender (!) finds that a HOOT! too.

No, Bambi. You are fooled by the name "National Socialism." There was nothing socialist in what Hitler (or Mussolini) wanted to do.

And no, Trump is not fighting for what you think he is fighting for, no matter how often you repeat it. "Freedom" for the rich and powerful, not freedom for everybody.

Mel Gibson is (not) dead

Struck with COVID-19 and treated successfully with REMDESIVIR.

God bless all those working tirelessly in laboratories to combat the China virus.

(...)
Anarcho-syndicalism sounds like a righteous way to live. It would probably be a good step toward perfecting our union. Most of my agenda can be shoehorned into its precepts with very little trouble.

Yep.   It's pretty egalitarian.  No one gets to own someone else, in any form.   And everyone who makes something has skin in the game.
