Race to vaccinate millions in US off to slow, messy start

Quote
Dr. Ashish Jha, a health policy researcher and dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, said the main problem is that states are not getting adequate financial or technical support from the federal government. Jha said the Trump administration, principally the Department of Health and Human Services, has set states up to fail.

“There’s a lot states still need to do,” he said, “but you need a much more active role from the federal government than what they have been willing to do. They’ve largely said to states, ‘This is your responsibility. Figure it out.’”

They don't like facts.

Anything that disagrees with them gets ignored or denied.

Movie theaters are open and operating at up to 75% capacity.

Why not 100 per cent?

Movie theaters are open and operating at up to 75% capacity.

Why not 100 per cent?

Because they've been careful every step of the way.  They've planned things well and with caution.  Staging increased opening in careful steps.

1. Movie theaters were allowed to re-open in China starting June 20 with a maximum of 50% capacity.

Shanghai reopened movie theaters on June 25 for the postponed Shanghai Film Festival.  Starting with just 33% capacity.  To limit interactions: only online ticket sales and no food/drink concessions.  T
Temp checks, "green" QR health code, facemasks + e-tickets required to enter.

2. Roughly a month later, circa Aug 1, SH movie theaters were allowed 50% capacity.  Still I believe without lines or interactions with theater sales people.
Just ticket and screening check on entry.

3. Sept. 25, nearly 3 months after theater reopening, 75% capacity was permitted in China (and Shanghai)

That's the last I heard.  Not sure if China allows 100% capacity yet.
Notice that they have multiple safeguards in place -- masks required, temp checks, green health code on phones, no sales to limit contact with staff.
It's like someone came up with a carefully worked out plan.

Quote
Since cinemas reopened in July, over 150 films have been released (including re-releases) to-date.

On 20 September, market performance data reports that in the past two months (Aug/Sept), the total number of cinema-goers in China was 150 million, with a total box-office of CNY 5.4 billion (~$900M)

Two Chinese films released over the Oct 1 National Day holiday pulled in $150M each.

The Hong Kong action movie "Shock Wave 2" earned $64.5 million in China and the Chinese fantasy movie "Dream of Eternity" grossed $39 million last weekend.

Rather nice to have entertainment, the economy working, people healthy and unafraid, living their lives normally.  So how's the movie/theater business doing in the US?

Pence asks judge to reject Gohmert lawsuit asking the VP to interfere in the Electoral College count

I'll bet that President Trump is not a fan of Pence's decision.

China would have strangled trump in his crib. One of the reasons they are allowed to have nice things.

 Year 2000:
Wonderful year in Australia, and most of the world.
Y2K bug was a fizzer.
Sydney Olympics...everyone happy, one big party.
Australia etc were looking forward to a bright future. A future full of wonderful promise.

This happy and delightful world future went up in smoke on 9/11...when the world changed forever.
Then troops left for Afghanistan.
Then the Bali bombings.
Then the Iraq war.

Yes, everything turned to mush...and has never recovered.
Now the Covid pandemic has just about finished it off.

There's some hope, but life will never be the same.

Y2K bug was a fizzer.

And this is one of the ways you demonstrate your complete and utter cluelessness.

You're one of the people who concludes that if we diagnose a problem and solve it, then it was never a big deal to start with.

The work to make the Y2K bug a "fizzer" was amazing ... and expensive, if not nearly as expensive as it would have been to not do it.

It was beaten by the kind of cooperation that could have beaten this bug, too, had it been allowed to flourish instead of being denied by the "leader of the free world," who opted out of the international collaboration and then refused to handle a national collaboration to deliver PPE and to coordinate a federal response, with the partial exception of Operation Warp Speed. And even that fell down once it got to distribution of the vaccine within states.

Bambu mysteriously left out Oz's China Boom.

Was good while it lasted (nearly 2 decades) and arguably the most consequential thing to happen in Oz in the 21st C.
