To clarify; part of what makes the politics in the US so dysfunctional right now is the notion that when the government does something, one side wins and one side loses.  McConnell is the high wizard of this bad thinking. Determined for 6 years to not give Obama any “wins” too many problems in this country went unaddressed.

The "presidential" move is keeping the government open.  Dems blinked - and allowed Trump this maneuver.  We all thank them.

Outline them for us.

Trump may be holding on to the possibility of declaring a state of emergency to build his Wall.  That he thinks he can do that does not mean that he can do that.

Otherwise, border security expenditure, like most budget items, need Congressional approval.  You know, again, the shutdown?

The original spending bill Trump torpedoed had 1.6 billion for an additional 65 miles of bollard fencing. The new one has 1.375 billion for 55 miles of bollard fencing. If that is what winning looks like to you, you should be a Browns fan.

There is and has been broad bipartisan support for more border infrastructure. I am actually encouraged that both sides hammered out a deal both can live with. Interest based bargaining has long been the best way to get things agreed upon and working. Pity McConnell pushed it aside in his "Make Obama a one term/Opppse anything" strategy. And later by the internal Republican caucus rule that prevented anything not approved by the far right of the party from even coming to the floor.

My hope is.when the Dems replace him in.2020 they do so with a candidate who can govern in the Clinton mode.

The government’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reported this morning that on the last day of December the number of job openings in the United States hit a record high of 7.3 million.
The Associated Press adds that the total of 7.3 million open positions is “far greater than the number of unemployed, which stood at 6.3 million.”

Businesses have shrugged off a variety of potential troubles for the economy in the past two months and kept on hiring. The 35-day partial government shutdown began Dec. 22, and growth in China, Europe and Japan has weakened, threatening U.S. exports. Still, employers added 304,000 jobs in January, the government said earlier this month, the most in nearly a year.


The jump in openings in December suggests hiring will likely remain robust... Tuesday’s data also showed that employers boosted hiring in December, while the number of people who quit remained unchanged at a healthy level of about 3.5 million. Higher quits are typically sign of a dynamic job market, as most people quit to take a new job.


The number of unemployed typically runs far ahead of job openings, but that switched early last year.
