Many post-war immigrants to Australia from Europe were bound to work for the federal govt for a certain term, in return for free/very cheap passage.
They were housed in basic accommodation like those semi-circular roofed buildings in which US troops used to live.
They stayed there until they could afford to move to other housing.
Skilled tradesmen, greatly valued.
They worked hard, completed their contract terms, then became citizens.
They saved, bought houses for their families, lived very frugally....also bought shops with a residence above and ran fish and chips shops, milk bars, coffee shops, fruit shops etc.
Over their lifetimes they still worked hard, still saved, and bought investment properties...said properties now very valuable.
Their children have, are, and will in the future inherit the wealth [built on "blood, sweat and tears".] Many taking over the family businesses.
The redistribute the wealth lot no-ideas see them as rich, and want to take their wealth and give it to people who 'wouldn't work in an iron lung', gambled their wages away, 'drank like fish', 'smoked like chimneys', and have no assets.
'Redistribute the wealth' lot...baaah!
