I just chatted with a friend who is a doctor in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and she is working in the Emergency Room at a hospital there, and she said that this disease is bad, and she said that the world leaders need to take it seriously. She said that Trump talking about opening everything back up is wrong, she said that Trump does not understand how bad this disease is. She said that she is cut off from her family through all of this, she does not want to get it and then infect her family. She is on the front lines.

She is an awesome doctor who cares about people. She was on the New York Times forums when she was in medical school. She went to medical school, then she was an intern, then she was a doctor, then she was a doctor at a research hospital, now she is working at the Emergency Room on the front lines of this pandemic.

I invited her to come to Elba, she was great on the Times forums, maybe she will pop up here on Elba.

And if you are a person who prays, then please pray for her. May God bless her as she battles to save lives.

I respect her a lot. She is awesome.

Salute,

Tony V.

Here is another factor.
A body of research suggests that women can battle viral infections better than men because they get pregnant. Living with another person inside -- you know a baby, gives  them a survival advantage.

Yes.  There are various measures of stamina and immune strength on which women consistently come out ahead of men.  The theory that these strengths relate to durability requirements for childbearing has help up pretty well.   The gender gap may be further widened,  as you pointed out,  by gender differences in tobacco use in some regions.   Tobacco can reduce both immune strength and (obviously) physical integrity of the lungs.   I would expect, in light of the virus's favorite habitat in the body,  that mortality rate due to CV will prove higher also where urban air pollution is most severe.

Similar to cancer in a way, I guess.  When you get it - its a matter of luck sometimes how it reacts in you

Except that in general men are dying at twice the rate that women are.
That’s your supposition but not backed up by reliable scientific data since  a worldwide breakdown of death by sex is incomplete.
We do know that it is true in places like Italy, China, and South Korea where men smokers greatly out number female smokers. The US does not report covid -19 deaths by sex.

Oh shut up.

While necessarily partial and incomplete, the results highlight what public health experts have been warning for some time, theorizing that it is not only biology but also gendered behaviors -- the different ways in which men and women conduct their lives -- which may play a significant role in the different mortality rate for respiratory diseases.[/size]
LOL!
Thanks for agreeing with me.

No, your position was that it was my supposition.

It was not mine.

And it is not supposition. It is observed evidence across 6 countries, with zero counter evidence to suggest it is mistaken.

Calling it supposition is like calling climate change supposition.

btw, in two days it is pretty likely that we will lead the world with the most cases, though we are likely to continue in 6th place in deaths for about a week before moving into 5th.

Looking at the breakdown by country, not quite understanding why Faroe Islands has the second highest rate,  per capita,  in the world at the moment.  (the highest,  San Marino,  makes some sense,  given the tourism and all of them packed into a tiny sliver of land)  I don't think of places so near the Arctic Circle as getting much tourism before summer.   Without researching further,  I'd guess a cruise ship somehow got diverted up yonder.

How do we know that Trump should be using his Defense Act powers, but isn't?!

If tomorrow (3/26) goes the way today went, by the time the counting is done, the US will have passed both Italy and China for most cases in the world.

yep

Some health experts were skeptical that more CDC employees operating inside China would have made a difference in stemming the outbreak. Beijing has been widely criticized for silencing its own public health officials who warned of a deadly new respiratory disease emanating from the Chinese city of Wuhan and surrounding Hubei province.

“The problem was China, not that we didn’t have CDC people in China,” said Scott McNabb, a former CDC epidemiologist who is now a research professor with Emory University. He pointed to China’s censorship as the main culprit in the spread of the pandemic, which has infected at least 435,470 people worldwide, killed 19,598 and upended the global economy.

Disagree with Governor Cuomo if you like but he says Trump is using the DPA as a bargaining chip.  Telling companies, "this is what I can do legally, unless you'd like to..."
