25,000 deaths in NYC
29 in Shanghai
Thoughts?

Multiple strains of coronavirus may have been endemic in China for millennia, so low death rates may partially reflect much greater general immunity even to a novel strain.

The Covid-9 ripped through Wuhan and Hubei pretty fast.  A major outbreak.  Stopped by a total 2 month lockdown of Wuhan and a pretty strong provincial lockdown as well.

Seems likely it would have spread in every province in China like it did in Hubei if not for strong timely precautionary measures.

It'd be interesting to see comparisons, but Hubei is about 80M people I think, roughly the size and population of a major EU country, and I think the number of cases and deaths were fairly similar to Spain/ Italy for the first month of the respective outbreaks.  But Hubei underwent a very thorough lockdown which stopped transmissions, while Spain and Italy dawdled and went in for half measures and their outbreaks spread.

My main take away on this virus is that it isn't that hard to stop transmission, if strong precautions are followed.  No crowds, shut down most work places for a month or more, face masks, temp checks, handwashing, surface cleaning, contact tracing, travel restrictions.

And the sooner you undertake these prophylactic steps the fewer people who get sick, the fewer who die, and the sooner you can resume normal activities.  Also, any reopening of the economy should be done gradually with some measures such face masks and social distancing still employed.

All evidence points to China making some poor early decisions and hoping to conceal the virus early.  But after that, most of China's actions have been a model on how to contain and respond to a viral outbreak.  I was impressed by the measures undertaken in Shanghai.  The only flaw i spotted was that the airport allowed crowds and gatherings, and didn't space people out, but at least everyone was wearing a mask.

Blaming China is popular sport.  But I don't get this idea that China could have stopped the virus from spreading around the globe if they had acted more responsible earlier.  The US had time to prepare, advance notice of what the virus was, and info on what worked to stop/slow the virus.  And yet when the virus reached the US, it wasn't contained or handled well at all.  Why would you expect China to snuff out the virus, when no other country did despite knowing it was coming?

And secondly, the US and EU had ample warning from China and the WHO.  Would another 2 weeks of warning time have changed anything?  The US was woefully unprepared and did such a botch job, it's hard to believe that 2 weeks more of preparation (really non-prep under Trump) would have changed anything in the slightest.

None of the China bashing adds up.
So China should have stopped the virus, when no country did despite knowing it was coming.  An extra couple weeks of warning would somehow have made a difference to countries that wasted and misused the pretty sufficient warning window they did have.

Other ideas that China unleashed the virus to weaken the West are pretty silly.  If that were the case, why not infect a few people and send them to NYC, instead of having a giant outbreak in your own country?   The escape-from-a-lab theory at least is plausible, though accidents and sloppiness and unforeseen events happen everywhere.

Former first lady Michelle Obama says in her upcoming Netflix documentary Becoming that it was a “slap in the face’’ that black Americans failed to show up to vote in the 2016 presidential election, according to the New York Post.

“It takes some energy to go high, and we were exhausted from it … when you’re the first black anything,’’ Obama said, referring to her and her husband, former President Barack Obama, of their failed efforts to help elect Hillary Clinton. You know, the day I left the White House, it was painful to sit on that stage, and then a lot of our folks didn’t vote — it was almost a slap in the face,” the former first lady added.
“It wasn’t just in this election, but every midterm, every time Barack didn’t get the Congress he needed, that was because our folks didn’t show up,” she said during another point in the film. After all that work, they just couldn’t be bothered to vote at all. That’s my trauma.

Look, it's Ward pretending to care about Blacks!
Interesting reaction.

We’re 13% of the population yet we’re expected to save white people from themselves time and again.

I view it as happening as a side effect when you save yourselves, rather than as a primary goal.

First thing analysts say after Democrats lose an election is “black turnout wasn’t at historic levels” never mind the fact 90% of their vote went to the party. Never mind all the GOP voter suppression. Fuck! If Democrats could just break even with white people...

Yes, they do, unless first thing is "if only the youth vote came out more!" But it's either of those 1st and the other 2nd.

90% is vital. And yes, higher turnout would be nice, even when it is at record levels! Nor is that the only group.

Breaking even with white folks is hard for the Dems, because of the degree of scared they (we?) are. But the percentage of white folks is dropping every election year, which means that while it would still be great to break even or better, it gets less vital or at least it has seemed to.

Except if they don’t throw this motherfucker out it will be the last election for a good while. Even if the Democrats win Moscow Mitch has stacked the federal judiciary with young stupid ideologues enough to stymie change for years...

This nation is dying of whiteness...

There would be a very different outcome in the US if Trump had taken timely precautionary and planning measures:

TESTING
- used the WHO test, while the CDC was coming up with one of its own
- authorized private companies to craete their own tetss; but also check to make sure these work
- ensured that necessary testing materials such as reagents, cotton swabs (for goodness sake), test kits were available
- promoted testing
- actually ramped up the promised mobile testing centers

FACE MASKS
- nothing worse than lying to people
- Trump should have gone on TV wearing a masks and advising Americans, especially those in cities and service workers to wear masks
- Masks should have been required to enter any business, even essential ones such as food stores

TEMP CHECKS

LOCKDOWNS
- Manhattan is actually pretty easy to isloate
- Basically the sooner you do a lockdown and the more compliance there is, it's over faster with less damage.
- don't take half-measures and allow iffy compliance.

In short: No Coordinated National Response doomed many people to an early death and huge numbers to a scary unnecessary illness.

I'd imagine US labs could be improved too.

During the OJ trial they really shredded the practices of the LA criminal lab, which changed practices at such labs all over the country, otherwise convictions would be jeopardized.

Not that that is a great analogy to disease testing labs.  But this virus is probably a good time to check on and improve security at such labs in the US and EU.  I assume China is improving its lab security, and probably had/has some iffy practices in place previously.

Quote
A woman, her adult son and husband have been charged in the fatal shooting of a security guard who refused to let her daughter enter a Family Dollar in Michigan because she wasn’t wearing a face mask to protect against transmission of the coronavirus.

Jeez.
They actually left, and then the father and a friend came back and shot the store guard to death.  Gotta exercise those 2nd A rights ...

They sure need to change the law so guns can't be brought into the statehouse.  That's nuts.  And wait until we get an incident where both protesters and counter-protesters are armed and angry.

Nothing good gonna come from lots of armed folks in public places.

https://www.foxnews.com/media/ben-shapiro-media-coronavirus-lockdowns-gop-governors

One of the favorite games of you folks is to accuse the Democrats/liberals of doing what you would do or being what you would be in our situation.

The GOP governors loosen the reins prematurely and therefore the Democrats must be looking to make them seem foolish, because that's what you would do in our place.

There is a way to commit voter fraud, so we must be doing it, because you folks would (and do) use  those methods (and others).

Eat shit.

With testing, Iceland claims major success against COVID-19

Sure Iceland is fairly small and isolated.
But they were prepared and took effective measures.  Mostly releid on Testing and Contact Tracing.  Never had to fully shut down their economy (still hit hard by lack of tourism).  And reopening after very few deaths.
