He's not in protective custody.

OK

His counsel lied, then.

Yeah, he did.

(...)
I know, I know. None of that is news to you, but then how can you even think a phrase like, " If he's not, then it's not a justice system in any real sense of the word?"

If he is then there is a vestige of justice, but nothing systemic about it.

Good post,  but I will point out that a fair number of posts here are just venting.  Take it as a given that,  when I post only one line or two, it's often not meant as carefully parsed analysis.

Cheers,  my friend.

This is the man elected to be President of the United States of America declaring that there will be extrajudicial killings of US citizens if they continue to protest.

Are you assuming Trump equates looting with assembling?

Trump doesn’t give a shit whose doing what.

I’m sorry I value life over property.

I didn’t hear this much outrage from you during the pumpkin festival riots.

If this is true, then it casts a totally different light on the matter, to me.

It makes me wonder if this was personal, rather than 'merely' police brutality.

Quote
Minneapolis City Council Vice President Andrea Jenkins said Floyd and Chauvin knew each other for many years because they worked security at the same night club. Both men worked at El Nuevo Rodeo on Lake Street before their fatal encounter.

Well,  this makes one ponder what they're going for with a third degree charge.   Third degree is "depraved heart" murder,  legalese for indifference to someone's welfare leading to their unintended death.   Indifference towards someone you knew for years - if that's actually the situation - has a different cast to it than indifference to a stranger.

It’s clear that whether you are looking at looting or assembling is contingent on the race of those in the streets for trump and his whole flock of poxy geese.
Actually I think the real question is whether Trump believes that shooting is the appropriate response to looting.  He seems to believe it is.

Except when he and his buds are looting the treasury.

As Needs said,  he's essentially calling for extrajudicial killing... for property crimes.

The owner of a popular Latin nightclub said that Floyd and Chauvin both worked as security guards at the club as recently as the end of last year, but it’s not clear whether they worked together. Chauvin worked at the El Nuevo Rodeo club as an off-duty security guard for nearly two decades, but Floyd had only worked there more recently for about a dozen events that featured African-American music, Maya Santamaria told The Associated Press.

Santamaria said if Chauvin had recognized Floyd, “he might have given him a little more mercy.”

Santamaria, who sold the venue within the past two months, said Chauvin got along well with the regular Latino customers, but did not like to work the African American nights. When he did, and there was a fight, he would spray people with mace and call for police backup and half-dozen squad cars would soon show up, something she felt was unjustified “overkill.”

Chauvin's wife is a radiologist who was born in Laos.
Chauvin's also received numerous complaints.

That knee on the neck of a handcuffed man on the ground is very abusive, very much showing off dominance, and you can certainly see how it could kill someone.
Why doe sChauvin have his hand in his pocket?  Is he using his hand to press down on that leg?

Interesting how choice of words matters intensely when we have a democrat in the WH,  but any sort of toxic verbal mouthfart from a Republican is just riffing or tough talk or metaphorical or just a joke or whatever ridiculous gloss-over comes to their tiny minds.

Of course - protective custody makes sense

Fuck protective custody, he should be held pending bail.

He's held and charged with murder and manslaughter.

The district attorney expects charges against the other three, but not as quickly - this is the fastest they have ever charged a policeman.

Just saw parts of the video.
Very disturbing.
Certainly appears  they wanted to inflict some pain and severe discomfort on Mr. Floyd.  Sure looks like Chauvin grinds in his knee a few times and Floyd screams in pain right after.

Amazing that the police do such things when they are being filmed.
Of course if this wasn't recorded, the police would have lied and covered up what happened.  We'd probably never know about a knee on the neck (by intent it doesn't leave a mark).  And if Floyd didn't die, this police abuse likely wouldn't have dealt with at all.  Shit goes on all the time.

Hell, I'd guess Chauvin's partners probably figured he wouldn't overdo it because he had done shit like this before and the arrested guy had always survived.  And the police never got in trouble.

And yeah, if George Floyd was white he almost certainly would still be alive ...
