To sum up the moment

The social contract is as traumatized and damaged as it has ever been

The economy is plunging down well past Great Depression levels

Any handle we had on the pandemic is out the window at least temporarily with the utter breakdown of authority

At the head of the executive branch and over far more of the country than actual votes would dictate is a party built on fear and hate making it fully immune to good ideas on any vital topic preferring violence instead.

None of the above curtails the usual trials, tribulations, and tragedies of the seasons from unfolding. Each of those things amplifies the whole host of recurring problems while also weakening any organized response.

The ship of state has been run aground. The creature at the wheel is signaling he’s fixed on driving it further into the rocks.

So could Trump pull a Nixon '68/72?  Where he looks like a creep nobody likes, but talks up law and order, the supposed GOP advantage on the economy, racism, religious opposition to abortion, white male grievances and a desire for a return to normalcy to win.  Fortunately we don't have Bernie as the radical left McGovern opposition.

Certainly looks like Trump will run another campaign based on fear.  Rioters, maybe Mexicans will become scary again, people wanting to take away your guns, baby-killing atheists, CHINA!   The scarier the world seems, probably the better Trump's chances are.  Dems can't lose another winnable election.

An essential article form the AP:

"Death By Racism": Part of America’s DNA from the start?

Quote
A study found that black people seeking testing or treatment for COVID-19 were six times more likely to be turned away than whites

Quote
How bad is black health care? In a 2010 study, sociologist Evelyn J. Patterson found that while prison generally shortened the lives of white inmates, incarcerated black prisoners had lower death rates than those on the outside. Mostly, she concluded, it was because they received better health care there.

There was talk of this circa 1990.  Regular diet, regular exercise, and most importantly access to decent quality health care.  Sad when it's less dangerous and better living conditions inside prison than out, for many poor people.

This is especially true in federal prisons which are generally much better run and funded than state pens.

Drug cartels in South America used to show pics of federal prisons to dirt-poor drug runners, to show them how clean and comfortable it was compared to slum life, with good food, free health care, etc.

She was never really in the running if Dems want to win.
Joe is an old white man why would he need a middle aged white woman, to help in the Midwest?

To get more female votes, to get more suburban votes, and yes, to win the Midwest.  Michigan, Wisconsin, PA and Minnesota are key states.  She could do well up there.

Basically Biden has 3 good options.
1) Pick a Midwesterner: Amy K, Tammy Baldwin, Gretchen Whitmer, Tammy Duckworth.  Amy was out on the national trail and did fairly well.  Whitmer stood up to Trump/Trumpism, but just one year on the job.  The Tammys less well-known but possible

2) go with a progressive, which pretty much means Liz Warren.  Downsides: she kind of overshadows Biden, with her energy, smarts, policy knowledge.  Lose a senate seat in MA.  They have different visions.

3) a black female, basically Kamala Harris.  Tough, smart, young, but from CA.
Some other contenders, but none that likely.  Rice, Abrams.

I'd favor 3, 2, 1 in that order.
Harris always my choice.
Wonder how urban riots factor into Biden's choice (if at all)?

But picking a midwesterner to shore up that region seems eminently sensible.
Of course Biden/Harris or Biden/Warren could simply put in the time and money and campaign up there, which Hillary failed to do, even though Trump's people made it clear that was his anticipated pathway to victory.

If you want to take away the lesson: shore up your base.  Then go with Harris.
If you take away the lesson: shore up the Midwest.  Well, then 1 comes into play as a distinct option.  Or go with 2 or 3, and simply campaign hard in the Midwest.

Clinton lost in PA, WI and MI by a total of 80K votes not in small part to Jill Stein and Gary Johnson and black voter suppression.

The place to cut into the margins are in the suburbs of the South and Southwest.

The majority of black people in the USA live in the suburbs, not the “inner cities.”

If Democrats stop chasing the mythical Midwestern white working class swing voter they’d blow the GOP out of every national election.

The Republicans know this and they are terrified. Why do you think they spend so much time, effort and money since 2008 trying to suppress minorities at the polls?
Why do you think JohnRoberts gutted the Voting Rights Act?

The majority of White voters ALWAYS vote Republican.

However, they’ve never seen anything like Trump.

Pandemic
Economic collapse
National uprisings

Oh, yeah.

Business as usual.

The suburban “coalition” is what put Obama in the White House.

That's an interesting thought.

As posted yesterday Trump has little but fear left to exploit.

When you have delivered Death and Depression, distraction seems the way to go.

To quote a line from the 60's

"Then I'll get on my knees and pray

WE DON"T GET FOOLED AGAIN"

With 40 million unemployed, and the probablity of being unemployed for awhile, people still getting sick and dieing from Covid and the ugly face of racism and police brutality sparking protest and rioting

There's a lot of pissed off and suddenly politicized people from different perspectives

it could be a long very hot summer

could civil unrest at the R-Convention be the spark of a law n order plank that Trump uses to bash the Dems?

I see some parallels to '68.
And that ain't good.

Would Trump stoke racism to energize the depolorables, while igniting violent protests that most Americans are against and don't want to rationalize?

In a NY minute.

The motherfucker cares little about how many people he hurts, and how many lives destroyed, for his own narrowly defined self-interests.

He is a malignant amoral cancer to our society and democracy that must be removed.

Has it been established whether or not he actually tried to pass a counterfeit $20 note?

Are you better off than you were in 2017?

Ironically, I am.

Bo, Warren's being chosen doesn't mean losing her seat.

Massachusetts has a sufficiently lopsided legislature in both their state senate and house that they will change the law for how a replacement is chosen, just as they have done twice before.

Your other points remain important.

Good post.   It's what many of us are concerned about.   Of course,  Nixon didn't have Taylor Swift to contend with.   IOW,  there are more people this time around who are awakened to the way the GOP whips up fear.   Trump openly rage tweets and slanders good people and is overtly divisive  - Nixon was smarter and sneakier.

Yup. The parallels between '68 and '20 are there.

The Repub convention in Charlotte could turn into a Daley-style disaster in several ways if orchestrated by the malice and premediated divisive motives and words of hate by Dictator Donnie.

This country so needs to rid itself of the cancer in the WH and try to get back a sense of decency and morality
