The thing that got me about the Repub's (McConnell, McCarthy, Hannity, FnF morons) sudden hard-on for masks was that it wasn't the 2.5 million sick Americans, or the 130,000 dead Americans, but rather the virus was spreading in the south and west, and maybe their voters might call in sick or call-in dead.

Yup, they are just worried about losing their public jobs.
Since Trump has gone down the toilet, and looks like a total election disaster, it is expedient to put distance between them and the Trump anchor.

Just amazing to me that parts of the US are finally coming around to mandatory mask-wearing  on July 1st.  March 1 or at least March 15 would have been sound and appropriate, saving lives, limiting infections, putting fewer health care pros at risk (the reason for the initial no mask policy lie).

It's ultra-weird that Trump was willing to go down in flames over the wearing of face masks and was unwilling to deal with what's essentially just a new kind of flu.

So far 8 states have had more cases than China.  With Georgia and Arizona set to pass China soon enough.  And nearly 2/3rds of China's cases were in the one province where it originated.  The rest of China had roughly 30K cases.  Nearly half the US states have had more cases than China outside the virus' home province.

The virus was and is containable.  The Trump Admin is deadly.
Wasn't there a time where Trump  said if we kept it to 75K deaths  it'd be a success?  Well, be double that soon, and even that number was a big revision from the earlier it'll go away in April, we have it under control, it's not a big threat nonsense of the first few months.

Oklahoma seems pretty close to becoming the next GOP state to embrace Medicaid Expansion (a part of Obamacare).

I thought Dems should have been pounding on this issue for years in such Red States.  Have daily protesters in front of the statehouses with signs (maybe armed too; you can get media attention that way).

Up to 2020, the Federal gov't was paying 100% of the costs of Medicaid Expansion (covering those making up to $35K for a family of 4).  After that the Feds still pay 90%.  So more than a dozen Red states refused to provide health insurance coverage to hundreds of thousands in each state (~150K in Iowa alone), even when it would cost the state nothing!

The GOP never had to pay a price for such ugly and harmful intransigence.
To get past their stubborn and cruel legislature, Idaho, Maine, Nebraska and Utah  all expanded Medicaid through ballot questions, by amending state statutes in 2018 elections.

The Oklahoma vote which just squeaked through -- by 6.500 votes out of 770K cast -- and actually amends the state constitution "to prevent the Republican-controlled Legislature, which has resisted Medicaid expansion for a decade, from tinkering with the program or rolling back coverage."  Missouri has an upcoming Aug 4 ballot initiative to do the same.

Quote
In November 2018, voters in Nebraska, Utah and Idaho approved ballot measures to expand Medicaid. As of January 2019, confirmed opting out states have shrunk to 13 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, & Wisconsin.

Geez, WI in with all these stupid southern states.

Just another example of how good government saves lives and improves health and bad government harms and kills ....

More on the Medicaid Expansion in OK:
https://www.foxnews.com/us/voters-in-oklahoma-narrow-approve-medicaid-expansion-report

Quote
Oklahoma Health Care Authority has projected that about 215,000 residents would qualify for a Medicaid expansion, at a total annual cost of about $1.3 billion. The estimated state share would be about $164 million.
But those numbers could be considerably higher given the number of Oklahomans who have lost their jobs and work-related health insurance because of the economic shutdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.

To help fund the proposal, the Legislature is expected to increase a fee that hospitals pay from 2.5% to 4%, which would generate about $134 million annually. Gov. Stitt vetoed such a measure earlier this year.

So a little tweak to an existing hospital tax and 215K Oklahomans have health insurance paid for.  Of course, if the state had acted sooner instead of being stupid these 200K OKers would have had Medicaid for the past decade at zero cost to OK.

I really thought this was a winning formula built into Obamacare, and the Dems never pursued it strongly enough.  Especially in states such as WI and NC where the Dems can win.

Quote
The plan was endorsed by several politically powerful groups, including chambers of commerce, medical trade groups, the Oklahoma Education Association and the Oklahoma Conference of Churches.

Some Republican opposition to Medicaid expansion has eroded in recent years, particularly in rural areas where hospitals have suffered financial problems or closed.

OK becomes the 5th state to approve Medicaid Expansion through ballot vote since their Red state legislatures consistently blocked it.  13 more intransigent states, hurting their own citizens.  With MO on deck for the next vote.

they actually just harmed the health and lives of hundreds of thousands of their citizens due to a dislike of Obamacare.

There's still no national response.
Maybe they can dig those CDC guidelines for reopening out of the trash.

Even Trump supports mask wearing.

Legislating is another matter.

So what can be done - short of legislation - are we to arrest?  $50 fines that likely wont be paid?  What is the enforcement angle on this?

You guys with kids in their 20s/30s- how do they feel about being so encumbered?  Are they anywhere at all sans mask?

Because THAT, seemingly, is the group of concern - not Republicans.

One thing I learned in my dealings with public health (doing social work in group homes) is how substandard housing can impact respiratory health.  Poor housing can give you asthma, in several ways.    And also,  living within 150 feet of an arterial (where cheaper housing is often found) has an impact on CV health.  We have a long ways to go on these issues.

You kidding me?

This week is the first that high ranking GOPers have come out in support of masks for all.

Trump?
I recall when he read the CDC advisory on face masks around mid-April.  He read it from a piece of paper in a bored monotone until he got to the part where it said that mask wearing was voluntary.  Then he perked up, repeated voluntary in a louder voice, added an aside that that means you don't have to do it folks.  Added that he wasn't likely to wear a face mask, couldn't see himself doing that.

In other words in disseminating the Feds message to wear face masks, Trump totally undercut the message, made it clear he wasn't on board, and undermined the whole initiative.  And since the Feds had earlier said not to wear a mask, the advice changing the policy was not just weakened but positively neutered by the Trump announcement.

Hell, Trump showed up at a mask factory and didn't wear one, went to a cotton swab factory sans mask, held a 6000 person political rally without one, has studiously avoided being seen wearing a mask, the WH is largely a mask-free zone,  etc.

Trump also further politicized masks by saying that many folks wear a masks just to show disapproval of him -- implying that his supporters should not wear masks to show their support.

Not sure what planet your news comes from.

In the video provided a single young woman engages 5 policemen in a very brief and somewhat heated debate, presumably about race.

Scott takes this brief encounter, again one young woman confronting 5 cops, and generalizes about the "droves of uneducated" voicing their complaints.

I don't think he  was paying attention to the facts as portrayed in the video.

Again protest is legal, and protest by its nature is not required to be polite or quiet.

it is by its nature supposed to be a little disruptive. If it wasn't no one would pay attention to it.

The young woman was well within bounds of exercising her free-speech.

What did strike me was in the midst of a pandemic, none of the 5 police officers wore masks and were not practicing social distancing as the young woman did....

Trump also further politicized masks by saying that many folks wear a masks just to show disapproval of him -- implying that his supporters should not wear masks to show their support.

This is the key.  kiidcarter8 could claim that Trump's position of shrugging his shoulders and saying "sure, wear a mask if you feel like it" counts as support in his Trumpist bubble.

But you can't argue that Trump supports masks when he makes an active argument against them that is targeted directly to his followers.   Also note his making fun of Joe Biden for wearing one on his twitter feed.

He also doesn't support social distancing.  Removing the stickers on the chairs in Tulsa was a clear signal.

The message from Trump has been clear throughout.  Ignore the virus, it will go away, and preventative measures are for dumb libs.  To the extent that Republicans continue to support a "president" that is actively working against the health of Americans, yes, this is a Republican problem.
